Makelele Released - The End of a Chelsea Era

CLAUDE MAKELELE
By dixon9 July 21 2008
Chelsea Football Club announced today on the official website that Claude Makelele has been given a free transfer to Paris Saint-Germain. His departure marks the end of an era for us and has also possibly come about due to a change in football philosophy under Felipe Scolari at Stamford Bridge.

Claude goes to the French club with a two year playing contract followed by a two year coaching contract.

Personally, I would have been tempted to keep him on for at least another season and wheel him out for the odd difficult CL match for example –  and even replicate the offer made to him by Paris Saint-Germain.

Claude Makelele, Chelsea

Many would cite Makelele as one of the most - if not THE - most consistent performer for our club and the principle reason why we have had such an impressive defensive record over recent seasons.

How many other players have had a position named after them?  I can’t think of any to be honest – you have the “Cruyff Turn” for example – but no player in football history has the honour of a defined role in football with his name on it.

We have lost a legend in football – but he goes with heartfelt best wishes from all Chelsea fans who applaud the clubs gesture in letting him go on a free so that he may receive more financial reward from his new club.

We are going to miss him.

Goodbye Claude – and THANK YOU.  We will never be able to replace you.

Maybe in a year or two the Makelele role could be renamed the Mikel role.

Expect The Unexpected, Oh the Glorious Unpredictability!!
