Favourable Reactions All Round
By Since66 June 12 2008
My only concern about Scolari's appointment is that he hasn't managed a club in Europe, but he has managed a European country to the World Cup semi-finals two years ago and looks set to at least equal a semi-final place with Portugal in Euro 2008. Concern over, lets get on with it. Inter Milan's new manager Jose Mourinho has already sent his best wishes to 'Big Phil.'

Chelsea players past and present have voiced their approval and with Scolari coaching Boswinga, Carvalho and Ferriera at the Euro's so it only seems right to start with comments made by Ricky and Paulo.

Carvalho who said at the beginning of the week "he would like to work with Jose again" said, "We were all shocked by the news. We heard the rumours but didn't guess he would be going to Chelsea after the Euros.

"He is a great manager and a big personality. He's the kind of guy that players respond to and I think we can go forward with him."

Paulo Ferreira said, "I think Scolari is a good manager and he can do a good job there - it will be good for the club."

Petr Cech's reaction after being beaten 3-1 by Scolari's Portuguese team said, "He is a manager with great charisma, great experience, great results. I look forward to working with him."

Ex Chelsea legend Nigel Spackman said, "It has been worth the wait, I think he's the right man to take Chelsea forward. The pressure will be on him to do well but he's had that pressure before and he's stood up to it."

"I think its a great signing. You only have to look back a couple of years and England wanted him."

Graeme Le Saux another Chelsea legend after two spells at Chelsea said, "Its an exciting appointment and a wonderful opportunity for the club to work with him, and a privilege for him for working for Chelsea.

Graeme Le Saux, Chelsea

"It is an opportunity for the club to continue its forward momentum over the last 10 years and he fits the credentials in every way - his status, his discipline, and if Chelsea want a particular player, with him as the figurehead, most players would want to play for him.

"The players that are here will be excited about playing for him, and last season's disappointments will be a fast-fading memory when you start to work under somebody like that.

"If you're playing for a manager like that and know you're one of his players and you're a part of his team its a privilege because he has as big a status as anybody else - it's an exciting prospect."

Scott Minto who chairs a lot of the phone-in shows for Chelsea TV and is also a Sky Sports pundit said, "He's got a fantastic CV and he's doing a brilliant job at the moment for Portugal. I think he will be popular."

SCOTT MINTO, CHELSEA

"The only thing is - and I'm not sure how good his grasp of English is - that he will have to learn the language pretty quickly. I think once Scolari does that he can communicate this thoughts to the Chelsea fans and they will listen to him and love him."

Another Chelsea legend, Colin Lee said, "I would think he will be hands on like Mourinho was, and I think the players will respond to that. Sometimes it's very difficult to judge a person unless you work with them but the impression you get from the new manager is that he's a very passionate person who wants his players to show that same passion.

"He's got masses of experience and you would imagine that he's got a tremendous knowledge of players worldwide so that can only be good for Chelsea. For the club to progress further, I think it's a wise appointment."

Only time will tell!

Indeed! Some favourable reactions all round.

With Scolari and a few additions I think we´ll going to see some REALLY NICE football from Chelsea - it might not be the type of football that will win the PL in his first season - but probably big ears in Europe!

Another thing occured to me - has Scolari actually signed a contract?

A very good point of course.

Been thinking about that and this is where I believe Steve Clarke will be so important. Clarkey will no doubt take a lot of the training sessions (albeit origonally directed or approved by Scolari) and will assist greatly in team talks etc...

We really need to make sure Clarkey is kept on board and is awarded a salary which justifies his importance - WE MUST NOT LOSE HIM. He appears to be quiet and modest to the outside world and he deserves a lot more credit and recognition (hopefully the board convey this and make sure he knows how much he is appreciated).

I´d go as far to say that without Clarkey, Scolari´s job will be much much more difficult.
