Man Utd 1-1 Chelsea (Utd win 6-5 on pens)
By Since66 May 22 2008
Started at 6am yesterday morning with the realisation that Chelsea were in the Champions League Final for the first time in our history. The butterflies were flapping away in my stomach all day and didn't disappear until the game kicked off some fourteen hours later. I donned the white shirt at work with Since 66 on the back, saving the blue shirt with Since 66 on the back for the evening.

The day at work went surprisingly quick as I tried not to think about what was going to happen in Moscow. There was the usual banter flying about who was gonna do what and the one and only Man Ure supporter was extremely quiet.

Shame really I do like to 'brush him' off simply because he has never set foot inside Old Trafford in his entire life.

Work finished - rushed home, quick wash, quick change splash of brut a couple of quick beers and off we go. Travelled up with Since 88 and on route arranged to meet Since 85 at Fulham Broadway.

We all finally met up about an hour before kick-off and set off to the Shed Bar.

Fulham Broadway was packed, Fulham Road was heaving - a sea of Blue and White. Started to think perhaps it would be difficult to get in anywhere to watch the game.

Lucky for us met someone who managed to get us into the 'So Bar,' although I think its called the 'So One Bar' now, and was reunited with mates that we hadn't seen for a couple of years. Drinking for me before and after games nowadays is a complete no-no - today's finances just don't allow it!!

As packed as the bar was it was surprisingly easy to get a drink once you got to the bar. Outside for a quick couple of cigarettes before kick off and off we go.

My lucky charm for most of this season had been my 'King of Stamford Bridge, Peter Osgood' badge which I wear above the club crest and on my heart. Fascination of the badge took one fan to the ultimate. Every available opportunity we 'bumped' into each other, he reached across to 'kiss' the badge. Brilliant and a hardcore fan. He kieed the badge so much I was worried he was going to lick Ossie off my chest.

Badge2

For me as the game wore on, I found myself rubbing the badge to give us the second goal that Chelsea for their play after the first thirty five minutes, deserved.

Even as the game stretched deep into the second-half and into extra-time I had no doubts we would win and bring 'old Big Ears' home to the Bridge.

Brilliant saves from Cech, wonderful clearance off the line from LEGEND JT, Chelsea hit the woodwork twice from Drogba and Lamps and right on half-time Super Frank equalised Ronaldo's opener.

I texted home saying 'I can't believe I am shouting at the telly.! I was bouncing and singing, I was hugging and was being hugged. The passion and excitement of that bar last night will stay with me for a very long time. God help us had we had won!!

As for the penalties. Well, the last time Chelsea won a penalty shoot-out was way back in 1998 after a League Cup-tie at Ipswich.

Chelsea don't win penalty shoot-outs and penalties was what we got. For the first few penalties and until Cech saved Ronaldo's, I was outside on the street watching through an open window. Back inside once Cech saved Ronaldo's I went only to be told to go outside again. Wish I had!!!!!

The rest they say is history!!!

I said a long time ago it would be a miracle if Chelsea win anything this season. Last night in Moscow, the miracle ALMOST happened!

To be honest, since the end of the match, I haven´t wanted to talk about the match if it could be helped. Football can be so cruel and I can´t help feeling a sense of injustice at the way the season ended.

Sometimes, others will just have that little bit if luck than us, that little bit of things just going their way. The way the league season ended for Man Utd at Wigan - the second yellow for Scholes that the ref bottled, the possible pend on Ferdinand....and now the CL final, dominated the 2nd half, hit the post, the bar.....and then Terry´s slip on his pen.

We were very wooden for the first 30 mins and they were ahead (although not playing particularly well themselves) and from then on it was most all us. If it had been a boxing bout we would have definitely won on points.

There were some very strange decisions ou there - and all in their favour - corners that were given as goal kicks, the malouda pen incident...and lets not forget the Ferdinand kug fu on Joe Cole where the linesman flagged and the ref waved ADVANTAGE! (What advantage could be better than a pen!!!),

Such a fine, fine line between success and failiure - and this time Man Utd have the bragging rights.

This about sums it up for me:

'It was painful to lose on penalties,' explained Clarke.

'We had chances over the 120 minutes to win the game. When it comes to penalty kicks it is a bit of a lottery, one slip and your chance to win the trophy goes.

'We all feel emotionally drained.

'It's difficult to lose any game of this magnitude. To lose on penalty kicks when you're within one kick of winning is particularly painful.

'We were stronger in the second half, and created more chances,' added Clarke.

'Even in extra-time we created the better chances.

'But it's not to be, sometimes in football you don't get what you deserve and tonight we didn't get what we deserved.

'Once we got back in the game we had control.

'The goal just before half time gave us the belief and the momentum to control the game in the second half and we had a lot of chances but the ball wouldn't go in for us.'

Please never call arsenal fans whingers again because the same way you feel hard done by about hows the season ended is pretty much hw we felt.

You were unlucky not to win the CL.
