Look Back in Anger - A Fans Review PART 1

By Simon68 May 25 2008
When I thought about writing this season's review I thought where better to start than the beginning. But, given the events of the CL Final, I thought it might be a good place to start with Wednesday's match as the reaction from the media pretty much encapsulates the difference in the way Arsenal are treated compared to the other three clubs in the 'Big Four'.

 Season Review Part 1

To start with I will say that the (CL FINAL) match was actually fairly entertaining. Not much good football, but plenty of incidents with players doing decent impressions of circus clowns by either slipping over, taking dives or exaggerating contact. Add in several spiteful incidents and the continual attempts by both sides, not just by Chelsea as has been reported, to influence the referee and it all added up to an eventful game.

There were a few good pieces of play, but few players played to their (in some cases overhyped) reputation & my overriding memory is of the players' behaviour, which was shocking, from early on when Scholes fouled Makelele, got a bloody nose purely accidentally, but the Man U players stupid reaction ensured Makelele got booked. I have no great sympathy for Makelele as he produced probably the most cynical piece of cheating (even Drogba would have thought twice about doing it) to get a Monaco player sent off a few years ago, but it set the tone for the game.

Both sets of players were trying to get players booked and the referee was weak. Did anyone else see Ferguson walk out of the tunnel and to pitch side with the referee after half-time, continually talking to him? Is it any wonder that so many shocking decisions went against Chelsea from the second half onwards? He overrode the lines men's decisions on several occasions.

Everyone was Kung Fu Fighting

Ferdinands Kung fu kick on Cole (?) two minutes from the end of the second half was as clear a penalty as you would wish to see. The linesman had his flag up & then put it down. Incredible. And it's hardly been mentioned since.

And what a fecking joke the Chelsea players starting a ruck when Tevez put the ball back out of play where Chelsea had for an injury to be treated. It was the usual Chelsea chavs involved - Terry, Drogba, Lampard, Cole. How dare they complain? So it's OK for Terry against us at Stamford Bridge to boot the ball 80 yards to 5 yards from Arsenal's line for a throw when Eboue put the ball out for a non-existent injury to the cheat J Cole. We were in great attacking position but 30 seconds later we had conceded a goal when Chelsea pressurised our throw and we went on to lose the game.

Chelseas John Terry sits on the floor dejected after slipping and missing his penalty.

How happy I was to see Terry slip and miss the penalty that would have won the Champions League for Chelsea. How fitting it was that Terry took the penalty because Drogba had been sent off for raising his hands in a melee (and about time too after last year's CC Final against us) and then did his best Drogba impression by falling over in the opposition's penalty area without being touched. Couldn't happen to a nicer ref berating, opposition player insulting, spitting, cheating, big mouthed, disabled car parking space stealing, two timing, and dance floor pissing, hopefully to be ex-England captain.

A ha! And there was me expecting a review on Arsenal - you´re doing the whole, kit and kaboodle? Fair enough!

Well spotted on the incidents re the 2nd half by the way.

Can´t wait to see your view on the Wigan v Man Utd game - even Bruce was flabbergasted by the decisions in Man Utd´s favour.

As for the media hating Arsenal - there´s no way on this planet that you suffer more than us. The media constantly put the boot into us - we are the upstarts, the univited to the cosy party that the old guard of clubs had created for themselves - since Sky and the PL its almost as if football never existed before and hoards are being educated and brought up on it.
