Paterson Update
By TheLongside.co.uk May 27 2008
Burnley have been interested in signing Scunthorpe United striker Martin Paterson. Following the rejection of an initial bid, today the Clarets followed this up with a second bid for the Northern Ireland international which was rejected by the Lincolnshire side.

The twenty-one year old was initially sought by Burnley two weeks ago following a £400,000 bid. This was turned down by United who are reportedly keen not to sell the Stoke born striker.

Paterson_270508_aToday the Clarets increased their offer to £450,000 with £50,000 after 30 appearances, another £50,000 once he had played 60 games and a further instalment should we gain promotion to the Premiership.

Manager Owen Coyle telling the official website:

"Suffice to say we have moved things on with different people. A couple of things have progressed.

"We have made an improved offer for Martin Paterson, and we await Scunthorpe's reply."

The reply was not positive and the offer was publically turned down with details of the offer released on the Scunthorpe official website.

TheLongside.co.uk message board users have been speculating that despite Scunthorpe saying that Paterson is not for sale, the article almost appears to be inviting a further third offer from the Clarets or improved bids from other clubs.

Owen must see something in him and I can't see him being 2nd choice if we are paying a lump for him

he may see something in him, but i would prefer to get someone about 25 with a good few years behind them AND in front of them. said it before but earnshaw would be ideal

or if we wnet for a young unrpoven one - MaClean from Peterboro

I don't mind us going for a young, unproven striker, but why do I get the feeling this is the new Ian Moore?

I'm worried he's going to be expensive and just run around a lot.

But what do I know, I hadn't even heard of him until a couple of weeks ago.

Exactly right longsider its doing my head in now people moaning everytime a player is linked.
What evidence do you base your statement that he's a new Ian Moore Lightcliffe?

Re: New Bid For Paterson

Unlike Moore he has already played at and scored at this level

Decent stats for last season - 13 in 34 starts ( and 6 sub appearances). Scored a goal for every 226 mins on the pitch, so 1 in 3.

Arguably in a poorer team than us - with better service he might do better?

And again LC, so we have a bad experience (IMMM) and then we never take a risk again - yet we want the club to make more money on transfers like Preston. How exactly do they manage this if it is not signing players like Paterson?

Hey look I've no idea how good he is or isn't nor whether he can do the business for us but he fits the profile and scored more goals than anybody we have last season. Surely we have to start taking punts on these players if we wish to move on?

Id be more than happy if we signed Paterson - 21 years old, scored 13 championship goals with a relegated side. I wouldn't like to see the club part with more than £600k for him though.

I (like alot of people) would rather see Riordan in a Claret shirt though.

For what its worth my gut tells me that Riordan could well be on his way here as well - and that he and Paterson will be signed using the cash we get for Lafferty.

Just a feeling - no doubt I'm miles off.

Right, well if he gets 20 goals next season I'll apologise. Just a gut feeling FFS. I've nothing to base it on, that's why I'm not manager of BFC. Shall I not state any reservations on any potential signings in the future Kev?

Riordan on the other hand is a more recognisable name, that's all I'm saying.

I understand what you are saying LC, I'm sure we all have reservations but this has to be the way forward IMHO - rather this sort of risk than get in a seasoned journey man for me

Yes reservations, that's all Kev. Can't be doing with these people who give it the "Oooh, how many times have you seen him play?", "Oooh what do you base that statement on?"

The fact is I haven't heard of him and I have of Riordan, and I had heard of Nugent when he was at Bury becuase people have been raving about him.

The only people I've heard raving about Paterson are Coyle, the Norwich boss (big deal), and some random folk online from relegated Scunthorpe.

I'd much rather trust the judgement of supporters of Hibernian (much bigger club than Scunny), and the powers that be (other than Strachan currently) at Glasgow Celtic.

'I'd much rather trust the judgement of supporters of Hibernian (much bigger club than Scunny), and the powers that be (other than Strachan currently) at Glasgow Celtic.'

He's not even playing at Celtic and Hibs are hardly a major force in the brilliant scottish premier league.

There must have been something in him for him to be signed by Glasgow Celtic. Hibs are a bigger club than Scunthorpe.

I would rather Riordan, and I haven't seen much of either of them.

Id rather have Paterson but would like both... and for us to sell Kyle.

Id pay a max of £1.25M for Paterson and £700K for Riorden.

Re: New Bid For Paterson

Let's get him signed.

None of us can know if he will be a success or not, but that applies to every signing. The manager obviously thinks he's good enough and what else can we ask for ? It's his job to identify and sign players he thinks will improve the team, no point worrying now that he's trying to do just that, that's what we pay him for after all, isn't it ?

There's only one way we're ever going to find out if Coyle knows what he's doing in the transfer market, give him some money and let him spend it, then we'll see.

i like to see ambition and buy young up and coming players. but to spend £1m on a player, i would have liked to have seen him do it at this level for two years at least OR done an exceptional job a la maclean at peterboro.

all this 'he did well at a struggling club' dont wash with me. there must be a reason why he played for a struggling club.

Can you honestly see us paying 3-4 million, because thats what these players cost.

If we go in with a third bid, hopefully it won't be too much more and we'd walk away if they were looking for nearer £1m.

He might turn out to be a great player, but on paper he doesn't appear to be a player you'd want to be paying too much more than £500k for. The Scunthorpe fans aren't exactly glowing about him and seem content with the £500k mark if you take a look at their mb.

Didn't Coyle say his transfer dealing will be done in private (or words to that effect) ?

Two of the best strikers I've ever seen were also around that size, Jimmy Greaves and Kenny Dalglish.

They're just off the top of my head TUW, there are many more I'm sure, but I can't be arsed to search them out just to disprove the ludicrous idea that a striker can't be any use because he's only 5ft 9ins.

Just two more though off the top of my head. Gerd Muller and Maradonna were both vertically challenged but it never stopped them putting the ball into the back of England's net, did it ?

All of the players mentioned though were quick, over a couple of yards or a longer distance.

I'm struggling to think of any small striker who is quality with being quick or skillfull.

Re: 2nd bid rejected

The only thing that matters with a striker is surely whether he can score goals or not. Many of the best strikers have been on the small side, Ian St John and Franny Lee are two more.

Being 5ft 9ins isn't going to stop Paterson scoring goals, whether he's good enough is another matter, but his height is irrelevant imo, except of course when considering what sort of strike partner to play with him.
