The Clarets Pack Em In At Selhurst Park

Palace v Burnley 1978/79
By Foreverclaret May 2 2008
It is Friday Evening 11th May 1979 and the Clarets are packing em in at Selhurst Park, well I would like to think they were, but I do believe it had more to do with The Eagles needing to win this their last game of the 1978/79 season to take the league Division 2 title, rather than them coming along to watch Burnley.

palacevburnleyprogramme_020508_aPalace went into this their last game of the season sitting in 4th place in the table on 55 points, Brighton were on top with 56 points, Stoke in 2nd with 56 points and Sunderland in 3rd on 55 points. Just a point was needed for promotion but Palace wanted to be Champions and nothing short of the 2 points needed was going to be good enough for manager Terry Venables. Their supporters turned out in their thousands and in fact this game was to become the highest ever League gate at Selhurst Park, the official crowd figure from the official Palace site is 51,801. It was no real surprise with that sort of backing that Palace would get the 2 points they needed and sure enough they did just that beating Burnley by 2 goals to nil the goalscorers being Ian Walsh and Dave Swindlehurst.

See the goals at the link below

palacevburnleyteams_020508_aThe programme shown in the article is not the original one for the game, such was the demand they sold out on the night and the club reproduced another one a few days later, the only difference between the two was the front and back covers.

The final league table left Palace on top with 57 points, and Brighton and Stoke the other teams going up into the top flight. Burnley finished 13th on 40 points and guess who finished bottom and relegated to Division 3, yep none other team than Blackburn Rovers, finishing with just 30 points and rock bottom.

Once again Palace are playing Burnley on Sunday in their last game of the season needing the win this time to assure themselves of a play off place.

Palace have been re-vitalised this season under the leadership of Neil Warnock, they have stormed through with a late rattle and do look the likely favourites for that play off spot, like him or loathe him Mr Warnock does seem to be able to get the job done.

This is the original programme sold on that night.

I can see the same score on Sunday though

Alex McDonald and Robbie Blake up front ?

Adam Kay in Midfield with duff making his return to action?

A couple of players there that I saw quite a lot of in later years. Jerry Murphy - absolute gash, and Peter Nicholas - we could do with his sort, absoiute nutter.

John Burrisge used to go to bed with his football, fact.

He says he'd sleep with it in his arms, not sure what else he got up to like.

I'm not surprised Palace won that division, that is some team.

Good old Vince Hilaire, he used to get some stick I believe!
