Burnley v Cardiff City Match Report

Grezzer Scores His First
By TheLongside.co.uk April 26 2008
The Clarets played their last home game of the season against Cup Finalists Cardiff City, the game ended as a 3-3 draw, with a fireworks in the final minute. The Clarets were an unchanged team from the one that beat Southampton 1-0 at St Mary's last Saturday.

The last home game of the season and the Clarets started the game brightly with Cole and Akinbiyi both having good chances within the first 7 minutes, but it was Alexander scoring his first goal for the Clarets  who put us in front on 36 minutes, this after the linesman had flagged for offside, but referee Andy Hall overruled him and the goal stood.

Burnley started the second half brightly, Wade Elliott going close with a header within a few minutes of the restart. It was Andrew Cole who put the Clarets further ahead on 54 minutes after he tapped in an Akinbiyi cross. two minutes later though and Cardiff were back in the game after Ledley had scored from the penalty spot, a direct result of Jordan's trip on Sinclair.Ramsey equalised for the Bluebirds on 68 minutes, this came straight after Cole had a fine shot saved by Enckelman at the other end.
It was on 79 minutes when young Alex MacDonald made is league debut for the Clarets when he came on for Elliott, within 7 minutes he assisted a goal from Carlisle by flicking on a Blake corner.
Just 60 seconds later and City were back level when Caldwell stuck out a leg and unfortunately the ball ended up in the net.

Then on 90 minutes all hell broke loose as Purse lunged at Andrew Cole leaving him with a very bad leg wound which subsequently needed 10 stitches. Purse was immediately red carded for his horror tackle. Cole then rapidly headed for the tunnel pursued by subs from both sides and the local constabulary, most fans thinking that Cole was going to give Purse a right old spanking. Owen Coyle though explained after the game that Andrew was only seeking rapid medical attention for his leg wound, mmm methinks it would have been Purse needing the medical attention if Cole had managed to get to him.
Cole claimed the challenge was the worst he had received in a long and distinguished playing career, and had this to say after the game

I have 10 stitches in my leg," said Cole, who admitted after receiving treatment he went looking for Purse.

"I have played the game at the highest level for 18 years and some muppet tries to challenge me like that.

"I only had eyes for the ball and what disappoints me is Darren said I went over the ball yet he must have gone higher than me.

"It's David Jones who should take a long hard look at himself, after the career I have had what he thinks is irrelevant."

David Jones countered with this;

"I will be appealing against the decision. Darren has over played the ball but he has not tried to do him. Andrew Cole needs to take a long hard look at himself."

Anyway the final result was a 3-3 draw, disappointing really after Burnley had gone 2-0 up, but another inept defensive display letting us down once again.
The result leaves Burnley on 62 points with the last game of the season Palace away next week, this is the most points gained since the 2001-2002 season.
