Southampton v Burnley A Previous Encounter
By Foreverclaret April 17 2008
Looking back to a previous encounter against Southampton, it was a game played on Monday Evening February 6th 1961, it was the very first season of the Football League Cup and both Burnley and the Saints had reached the 5th Round which was the quarter finals.

saints_170408_aThe Clarets were current League Division 1 Champions and riding high in 4th place this season, Southampton occupying the same 4th position but in League Division 2.

The Clarets put on an extremely entertaining display of football and ran out comfortable 4-2 winners with Ron Fenton scoring two of our goals, and so the Clarets progressed into the Semi-Finals to meet Aston Villa.
This game had impressed one Southampton supporter so much, he immediately after the game decided to write a letter to Harry Potts, his letter read.
" I have just got back after watching your team beat the Saints 4-2 and I would like to say how much I enjoyed the game. To me it was football at its best. I do not expect I shall be lucky enough to see Burnley play again this season, but they have gained another supporter, and I would like to wish the whole team the very best of luck for the remainder of the season. If it is possible to gain a "hat- trick" of major honours in one season, I wish sincerely that it will be Burnley's turn to do it this year. Once again, thanks to your team for a wonderful night of football which I will remember for many years to come."
Wouldn't it be great for a fan from another club to be able to write compliments like that today ? I suspect we will be waiting quite a while before that happens again.

It appears that the game was a delight to watch and when football is played with skill and with some passion it can leave impressions like that ...even today, although I think it is becoming a rarity.

The sad thing is that the game isnt the same as it was then, it has changed with rules being introduced which have reduced it to a game of virtually no contact...which makes players passionless with too wary of getting stuck in to win the ball. All that does isleave us fans to watch (on a regular basis) predictable boring football.
