That Could Be It PNE v Burnley Match Report

My Airwaves MOM
By The Longside March 22 2008
That could very well be it, our hopes of a play off place could now be well and truly dashed after our defeat at the hands of local rivals Preston North End at Deepdale this afternoon. It was another game where the Clarets promised a lot but once again couldn't capitalise on some good play.

Match Report
Saturday 22nd March
Preston North End v Burnley
Crowd 16,149
Teams
Preston
Lonergan, Davidson, St Ledger, Mawene, Jones, Sedgwick, McKenna, Carter, Whaley, Brown, Priskin  Subs Chaplow, Hill, Lewis Neal, Chris Neal, Mellor
Burnley
Jensen, Alexander, Harley, Carlisle, O'Connor, Akinbiyi, Elliott, McCann, Lafferty, Blake, Unsworth. Subs Kiraly, Caldwell, Gudjonsson, Mahon, Cole.
Just after 2 minutes of play, Ade Akinbiyi makes his presence felt and barges strongly into St Ledger, St Ledger is shook up and has to leave the pitch for a few minutes but returns. After 5 minutes Preston take the lead after Priskin scoring his first goal for Preston curls one past the outstretched Jensen. Priskin it was who picked up a poor clearance from Unsworth. Brown very nearly made it 2-0 when he headed towards goal forcing a good save from Jensen. the pace hots up as Priskin and Brown both fail to convert good chances, Priskin forcing Jensen to make a good save in the 12th minute.
Alexander makes a crude challenge on Whaley bringing him to the ground, but Rennie only has words. On 16 minutes Blake should have equalised but blasted over the bar high up into the Town End stand.
Elliott starts to pick up his game and causes North End problems, Lonergan saving a shot from Billy with his legs. Alexander gets himself booked on 24 minutes after another rough challenge on Whaley.Lonergan has to be on his toes and tips a pulsating shot from Blake over the bar. End to end stuff now, Jensen makes another good save when Priskin side foots towards goal. Elliott now and he smashes a 30 yarder towards goal just missing the post.
On 37 minutes James O'Connor strikes from the edge of the box, the ball resting in the corner of the net, could have taken a deflection but hey who cares it is all square at 1-1.
Burnley continue to press forward, and on 39 minutes Mawene receives a yellow card when he pulls Ade's shirt.
Owen Coyle decides to change things at half time and brings on Steve Caldwell for David Unsworth.
Burnley start the second half well, McCann shooting wide early on. But this pressure is not to last as on 56 minutes Brown makes it 2-1 to Preston after scoring a scrappy goal when the Clarets failed to clear. North End are now pressurising and Coyle decides to make another change when on 68 minutes Cole comes on for Lafferty. Then on 73 minutes Coyle makes his final change with Gudjohnsson coming on for O'Connor.
Akinbiyi bursts through but Lonergan dives bravely at his feet to stop his progress.
Once again it is end to end stuff with Sedgwick for Preston and Cole for Burnley both having shots blocked. On 88 minutes Mawene nearly headed the ball into his own net, just watching it go past the post.
On 90 minutes Blake gets himself booked for dissent, then to make matters horribly worse Carlisle, after fouls on Whaley, then St Ledger is straight red carded for serious foul play.
Uriah Rennie finally blows the whistle, with the score Preston 2 Burnley 1

It was a poor clearance from Unsy, not Carlisle.
