Steven Caldwell was the only change to the starting line up versus Colchester United, replacing David Unsworth who was suffering with a virus. The Clarets started the game brightly forcing a couple of early corners but QPR soon began to control the game. On fourteen minutes QPR took the lead. A back heel from Agyemang found Buzsaky who's cross was met by Mahon and past Jensen in the Burnley goal. After more pressure from the home side QPR finally made it 2-0 after 30 minutes. Agyemang rounding Jensen and calmly finishing into the empty net. Now it seemed to be a case of damage limitation for the Clarets but how a goal can change a game. That goal came on 41 minutes as Cole grabbed his first of the night diverting a Gudjonsson free kick past QPR keeper Lee Camp.
The second half saw Akinbiyi replacing Blake and again Burnley started brightly. On 55 minutes the Clarets were level. Sub Akinbiyi's cross being met by Cole to get his second. Now it was all Burnley and Elliott came close to giving the Clarets the lead but his long range effort hit the post with the keeper beaten. Akinbiyi's influence in the game was now evident and on 77 minutes he headed his eighth goal of the season to give Burnley the lead for the first time. Undoubtably the star of the show though was Andy Cole and on 87 minutes he got his deserved hat-trick converting Alexander's free kick. This was Coles first hat-trick since 2000 when he grabbed 3 for Manchester United in a Champions League match against Anderlecht. Let's hope he doesn't have to wait so long until his next. "It would have been very easy at 2-0 down to fold and end up getting a hiding, but nothing could be further from the truth." Luigi De Canio: "Maybe, because of the type of football we played in the first half, we left ourselves open." "Burnley took full advantage of our mistakes."
