1959/60 Series - Burnley v Sheff. Wed.
Saturday 2nd April 1960

After Wednesday night's disastrous 6-1 defeat at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers, it was essential for the Clarets to get something from today's game against The Owls. Burnley came into this game in 3rd place in the league with 42 points, they were 3 points behind second placed Wolves and 4 points behind league leaders Spurs, but, crucially they had played 2 games less than both 1st and 2nd placed.

Within 3 minutes of the game kicking off, Wednesday were one up from a well taken goal scored by Ellis, was this going to be another disaster for the Clarets? During the rest of the first half, Sheffield certainly roughed us up a bit with both Kay and Craig being the main culprits. Sheffield went in at half time one goal to the good, with the many of the Burnley faithful hoping beyond hope that their heroes would come out in the second half and pressurise the Wednesday defence a lot more than they did in the first half.

Well Burnley certainly changed tack in the second half with them resorting to hoofing the ball upfield, rather than rely on their football skills. As a result of one such move Connelly banged in the equaliser after Wednesday had struggled to adapt to this new style of play.

Almost immediately after the restart though, Finney had put the Owls back in front at 2-1. Craig was the next on the scoresheet for Wednesday, now 3-1, Burnley were going to have to dig deep now if they were going to get anything at all out of this game.

The Clarets continued to apply controlled pressure, and were rewarded when Mcilroy scored from the penalty spot to bring the score back to 3-2. Burnley were now sweeping forward at every opportunity in search of the equaliser, it came on 88 minutes when Miller hammered home Burnley's 3rd goal. The crowd were ecstatic, their heroes had clawed their way back, and won in the end a much deserved point.

Harry Potts Calling

An unusual announcement in Harry's notes this week, certainly information I do not recall at all.

Harry Wrote:

"I am very pleased to be able to announce that the England eleven to meet Scotland will be visiting Turf Moor next Wednesday morning for a private trial against us. No doubt many people will wish that they could get in to see this match, but that is out of the question. The Football Association control these games and they insist on them being strictly private. We have accommodated similar games before, as many of you will be aware, and we are very proud to have the honour of doing so. Such games are a training spell and the club that is invited to provide the opposition for the test before the England side goes into action in the National Championship has every reason to count it a compliment. We look forward to taking part in this interesting purpose once more and will do our best to make the occasion the most valuable we can for the England selectors and the men they have chosen to represent our country. We welcome them to our headquarters most wholeheartedly. The opposition in such games is expected to play to instructions from the England officials and it is a compliment to our players that they should be considered equipped for carrying out the needs of the Football Association.

Later this month we have another interesting match here in which you will be able to become spectators, and again it is a match of International standard, for Turf Moor has been selected as the venue for this season's International between England and Scotland Public and Grammar Schools representative match. It is an evening game and I hope you give it all the support you can."
