With both clubs not involved in Cup competion TECH and Boys Brigade arranged to face each other for the first time for some years over on the Friarage. With both clubs having suffered a disappointing start to the season it was looked upon as a game that could be of benefit to both sides with the result being the least important factor. TECH took the opportunity to give as many players as the could a run out as both sides agreed to rotate substitutes as and when they wanted to.
Brigade kicked of and showed they were up for the task as they drove at the TECH defence with relish. TECH however stood firm despite conceding an early penalty for offside. After 5 minutes a good break by TECH skipper Steve JONES saw him hand on to Adam HOWARD. He also made ground before being halted. TECH’s recent signing Adam RYAN was on hand and smartly picked up the ball before showing his speed and foot work to go through for a debut try. Jon COLE kicked the resultant conversion.
Despite this reversal the home side continued to try and play good rugby and this resulted in them troubling the TECH defence although they were held at bay. After 14 minutes TECH added to their total when from possession at a line out Chris WILLIAMSON made a sharp break. He passed to the supporting STOCKDALE who went over for the try. COLE again converted. Undeterred Brigade again came back at their visitors and on 19 minutes good handling by backs and forwards saw them score a converted wide out on the right.
With their forwards dominating things TECH kept the ball tight for long periods and this tactic saw them add further tries from HOWARD and STOCKDALE. Cole converting both. Good interplay involving centre Jim DICKENSON, Adam HOWARD, Paul DOVE and Adam RYAN then saw Andrew DIXON cross for a rare try to take the score at half time to 31-7
The second half saw TECH continue to dominate through their forwards but the game was marred when Stephen SMART stamped on a Brigade player. A melee then ensued in which players from either side became involved with punches being thrown from both sides. Referee Mike HODGSON eventually calmed the situation down but although he had seen the stamp he was not able to identify who it was. He initially called Paul DOVE over to him only to be informed by players and supporters alike that he had not been responsible. Stephen SMART informed the official it had been he who was the offender and after what seemed an age after the incident was sent off. The official then surprised most observers by also calling over Kevin COOK and dismissing him for punching.
Following this incident the game continued with little problem though Brigade had a player yellow carded for a trip on STOCKDALE. Although down to 13 men TECH continued to dominate proceedings and added further tries through WILLIAMSON(2), DIXON,DICKENSON, DOVE, and JONES. COLE & WILLIAMSON each converting one. In the meantime Brigade scored a try of their own following a forward drive to make the final score of 63-12.
