McGarry and Clarkson supported Porter in a three-pronged attack and they linked up brilliantly to give Motherwell the lead.
After a great one two with Porter, Clarkson sent a square ball, which allowed McGarry to sweep in and open the scoring with just two minutes gone.
Saints responded with corners but a lack of creativity denied any glory and Well came so close to doubling there lead with a counter attack that saw McGarry’s cross headed off the bar by Clarkson.
Motherwell was then granted a penalty after McGarry’s free kick was blocked by Billy Mehmet’s arm but Jim Paterson sent the ball well wide.
McGarry was denied another goal when he saw himself one on one with Chris Smith but the young keeper forced McGarry wide and the opportunity was lost.
Chris Smith saved saints again when he turned Clarkson’s effort wide.
Saints lacked creativity which hopefully will get better when Dargo resumes full fitness and if the Roy Dayan deal goes ahead.
