Inverness deservedly won a poor match that was attacked by wind and rain.
St. Mirren enjoyed early possession and a chance was wasted when Billy Mehmet’s header went wide.
Zander Sutherland was first to test a keeper with a shot from distance. Chris Smith saved the shot neatly.
Rory McAllister was next to test the keeper who fired a left footed strike from twenty yards out after a mazy run but his shot was off target.
As the rain heavily pored down, Dargo passed up a good chance when he shot wide from close range as Inverness started taking control of the possession.
Dargo wasted another chance when his close range shot went high and wide of the goals.
St. Mirren’s first real chance came near the closing minutes of the first half when John Sutton’s powerful shot ended inches away from the post.
The first chance in the second half came from an Inverness free kick that Chris Smith saved well.
Ross Tokely was next to come close when he flicked a header just past the post from a corner on the left side. Smith then pulled off a terrific save to tip a deflected long-range effort from Ian Black over the bar with his left hand.
Inverness took the lead in the 74th minute when Chris smith flapped at a cross that allowed McCaffrey to head the ball into the net from close range.
Alex Burke was close to grabbing the equaliser but after beating the keeper, his shot was deflected wide by Ross Tokely and went out for a corner.
