Battle for honours is a two horse race

The battle for honours in Division Two has now become a two horse race. Holmesfield are in pole position, having inflicted a heavy defeat on third placed Grindleford.

Holmesfield made 268-5 (N.Pearson 69, T.Youngs 80, J.Pearson 52) and rolled over the home side for just 83. Second placed Ashford In The Water were equally as devastating with a comprehensive win over unfortunate Old Edwardians / Collegiate II. Old Eds were skittled for just 18 (John Carrington 5-11) which Ashford passed in just two overs without loss. Fourth placed Parkhead II came out on the lower end of a drawn match against Bakewell. James Luckraft scored 94 in Bakewell's 172-4 as Parkhead replied with 130-8 (Roy Peach 6-73).

A fine performance by Paul Sharman saw Chesterfield Barbarians move above visitors Millhouses. Sharman made 49 in the Barbs 177 all out (Akeel 6-28) and took 5-46 to dismiss Millhouses for 140. Sheffield Works Depaartment II posted 186-6 (Marples 43, Burley 41) at Stocksbridge II and bowled them out for just 48 (Thompson 5-22).

Some interesting results had an effect on the lower end of the Division One table. Strugglers Dronfield Woodhouse had the result of the day by defeating third placed University Staff. Alan Maskrey claimed 9-34 to dismiss Staff for 85 and then saw Chris Sanders hit 62 not out to guide Woodhouse to a ten wicket win. Second bottom Stocksbridge also triumphed over fourth placed Parkhead. Parkhead made 157-7, which was passed by Stocksbridge with one wicket to spare.

Sheffield Works Department did their survival hopes no harm by beating Hathersage. Hathersage were sent back for 71 (Brad Sampson 5-27), which Works passed with two wickets down. At the top end of the division, Hundall scored 185-9 (Chris Pursehouse 50, Michael Clegg 5-71) and dismissed Baslow for 90. Stanton In Peak remain second following victory over Old Edwardians / Collegiate. Old Eds were sent back for 59, which Stanton achieved with four wickets down (David Hadfield 44). De La Salle restricted Centralians to 148-5 and then saw James Hartley hit an unbeaten 102 to guide them to a ten wicket win.

The Division Three standings remained unchanged with leaders Calver getting back to winning ways. Burnett (66 no) and Bonsall (45 no) saw them home without loss after restricting bottom side Millhouses II to 125 (Hargreaves 63). Second placed Centralians II bowled De La Salle II out for 152 (Wainwright 49 no, Kennedy 4-33) and gained a comfortable eight wicket win (Schofield 47 no, Statham 59).

Hathersage II maintained their third position by turning over Dronfield Sports II for 76 (Richard Mason 5-29) and creeping to a two wicket success. University Staff II were bowled out for 157 (S.Khan 44) but returned to skittle Dronfield Woodhouse II for a meagre 36 (S.Khan 6-17). Laycocks posted a useful 195-6 (Hackett 52 no) but saw Calow hold on for the draw at 109-7 (J.Smith 51, M.Scanlan 4-25).

Richland Wanderers continue to head Division Four, where the top three sides are separated by just twenty one points. Richland made 206-3 (Andy Tann 56, Dave Bell 49) at home to fourth placed Baslow II, who went down for just 59 (Mark Wilmott 4-14). Second placed Ridgeway declared on 187-5 (J.McLoughlin 42, P.Burke 63) but saw BT Pensions / AGD II hold on for the draw at 118-6.

Bottom club Calow II scored 107-9 (Steve Pemberton 43 no, Mark Hill 4-32) at third placed BT Pensions / AGD I, who gained a five wicket win (Nick Smith 54 no). Coal Aston posted 167-7 (A.Lawrence 73) and then rolled over Stocksbridge III for just 69 (Andy Wood 4-14). Great Longstone were dismissed for 113 (M.Sayers 50, G.Mullins 5-50) but then sent back Chesterfield Barbarians II for 93 (D.McGoverne 4-19). Zingari were bowled out for 117 against Transport, who claimed a two wicket victory.

In the Knockout Cup Semi Finals, University Staff dismissed Parkhead for 102 and claimed a seven wicket win (Paul Kerry 48 no). Sheffield Works Department registered 207-8 (Simon Pass 107 no) at Holmesfield, who reached the target on the penultimate ball with two wickets to spare (T.Hamilton 100). The final is to be played on September 7th.
