Leeds v Carlisle - Playoff Preview

Beckford should be back
By Andy Baggott May 12 2008
How many crucial matches has this club of ours had over the last 6 or 7 years? Remember the semi finals of the Uefa Cup - then the Champions League? It wasn't that long a go I was writing about the make or break games that led to our relegation from the Premiership - or the Play off Final with Watford - then the games that led to our fall into this division last year.

Now we have some more, beginning tonight against Carlisle.

It is a vital match, and one that could signal the start of the long haul back to where we once were.  That journey back starts now.  Make no mistake, we face 2, possibly 3 cup finals in a short space of time.  Carlisle will want this just as much as we do, and our players must prove they are up for the fight.

The good news is the return to fitness of leading scorer Jermaine Beckford.  He will partner Dougie Freedman in an exciting forward line.  At the back, Gary Mac must decide who to slot in at left back.  Alan Sheehan is suspended, so Hughes, Bradley Johnson or Darren Kenton is likely to fill in.

Midfield should see Jonathon Douglas alongside Neil Kilkenny and probably Jonny Howson - although David Prutton could come into the mix depending on the left back situation.  Seb Carole is also pushing for a start after impressing as a sub against Gillingham.

Away goals don't count double in the play offs, so expect tonight to be a cagey affair.  Both sides will still want to be in with a chance of progressing at the end of 90 minutes, so things will be tight.

Game kicks off at 7.45 in fron of a near 40,000 crowd, with the return leg on Thursday.
