Coventry Telegraph - Fanzone Article No. 3

Had I posted this before it was due to make its Telegraph appearance last Thursday, it might have all seemed so relevant! But, because I decided to post it after returning from a break, the mention of not scoring enough seems way wide of the mark, following the demolotion of Southampton!

It's hard to be critical when a side not expected to do much sits in seventh place in the table (Before the Cardiff fixture), but we've missed three very decent chances to score in the last minute in three of our last five fixtures, so it could have been far better!

Unbeaten in four, which included three fixtures against teams above us, and a tricky game away to a side that won away at promotion hopefuls Birmingham City the week before, would suggest we are improving - and all this, once again, without a real right-back on the pitch.

Seven goals in eight games is a poor return though, especially as we have two top quality strikers in our side. Kevin Doyle has scored more goals in his last three home games for Reading than our entire squad has managed in the league this season!

The fitness - or otherwise! - of Tabb, McKenzie, and Eastwood, is one possible reason for our lack of fire-power, with reports before games suggesting that said players are carrying knocks or doubtful for matches, only for them to end up playing anyway! This once again shows a lack of strength in depth as far as our squad is concerned.

While his first job is defending, it would be nice to see Isaac Osbourne break his scoring duck, as he looked as if he knew where the goal was when he first came into the side, yet he is now on 97 appearances for the club and probably hasn't been close in the last few seasons!

After the first few fixtures, my opinion was that we had very good defenders, without being a particularly good defence. That opinion is changing! While the players decision to ignore Chris Coleman's half-time team-talk versus QPR was annoying, the rear-guard display was out-standing. And when the defence was breached, Westwood proved he is a snip at the fee we paid.

I've said for a fare while now that Coventry City supporters are in desperate need of a hero, and in Freddie Eastwood I believe they have finally found one. His ability on the ball is as good as I've seen from any player that has represented us in our seven years in the Championship, and when he adds goals to that, he will also prove to be a bargain.

The decision to loan Kevin Thornton to Brighton will hopefully benefit all parties, and it's to be hoped that he plays in every game available in his time there, and decides he enjoys being part of the first XI, and does whatever is necessary to become a regular in Coventry City's first team - not somebody elses a few divisions down. He should be a first-team regular in our side by now.

The three games for fifty pounds offer by the club (For the games against Southampton, Burnley, and Derby) should be not only applauded, but it should be supported! Attendances have been very disappointing, with a fair few people blaming the on-the-day price, so this should put an end to that excuse! Under £17 a match is a bargain!
