Relegation Watch Too
By CovSid67 April 15 2008
Two places definitely gone, just one more up for grabs! And thanks to two defeats in two games to two stumbling Premiership chasing teams, Coventry are up the creek, and searching for paddles! At the minute it doesn't look as if Coventry City are going to get themselves out of this mess, so we're looking for favours. With that in mind, good luck to WBA, and possibly to Wednesday and Barnsley!
How the relegation threatened teams fared over the last week....

Norwich (No change): Lost 2-1 to local rivals Ipswich, despite taking the lead four minutes into the match. Almost definitely safe anyway, with a four point lead over third bottom, and most of the teams in-between having to play each other.

Barnsley (Up 1): After four successive defeats, two unlikely wins! (Both away from home too, after a very disappointing season on the road). Barnsley's future looks far more secure, though a midweek fixture against promotion chasing Hull will hopefully slow up their sprint away from Coventry City! (They are now three points ahead of us, with a better goal difference).

Blackpool (Down 1): Things looked okay with 10 minutes left in their fixture against WBA last Tuesday, with a 1-0 lead meaning a shock result looked on the cards. Sadly for them, a late collapse saw them defeated! Cardiff put them out of their misery far quicker on Saturday, going 3-0 up within an hour (Before Morrell scored a consolation goal). Those successive 3-1 defeats leave Blackpool looking far less secure than they were a month or so ago, and they have now gone eight games without a win. With their goal difference far superior to Coventry's, Coventry need at least one win, and for Blackpool to take no more points, for them to finish below us.

Southampton (Up 1): A 1-1 draw away to Charlton saw Saints' mini revival continue - two games unbeaten! (Though, as a Coventry City fan, I would take that at this stage of the season). Two points off third from bottom, but with the worst goal difference of all the sides battling relegation.

Sheffield Wednesday (Up 1): Drawing their way ouf of relegation, with eight on the trot now! Like to give their watching public excitement, having equalised in the last minute against Coventry City, they then threw away a 2-0 lead by conceding two late goals to rivals Sheffield United last week, before snatching another late goal on Monday evening, against Plymouth! Three games against three teams battling against relegation left.

Coventry City (Down 2): Not enough urgency shown by those wearing Sky Blue, who obviously don't read the papers or the matchday programme, because if they knew how much trouble we were in, they might just give it everything they've got, and a bit more, to help dig us out of the mire....

Leicester (No change): A priceless last minute goal at home to Colchester (Scored by a player who was an injury doubt) could be the difference between Coventry City or The Foxes going down, with their goal difference already far superior to ours (And worth a point on its own). A poll on one of the clubs unofficial websites shows their own supporters see them as favourites for relegation, and they definitely weren't happy with last weekends display, with one fan running onto the pitch to rip up his season ticket (Not such a grand gesture with only one home game left to play!).

RELEGATED! Scunthorpe (No change): They looked doomed, and now, after a 2-0 defeat against Crystal Palace, their one season stay in the Championship is over, and they're dropping back down to League One!

RELEGATED! Colchester (No change): Also definitely down, but could have done Coventry City - amongst others! - a massive favour by holding out for just one more minutes in their match against Leicester.

As for those looking to join the Championship, Swansea and Derby are definites (With, according to Teletext, Derby having already spent their first years parachute payments!), while Fulham and Bolton threw themselves life-lines (In a bid to avoid it!), with wins over Reading and West Ham respectively.
