Eight To Go....
By CovSid67 April 10 2008
For the benefit of any scouts looking in, searching for information on our eight soon-to-be released players, here's all you need to know. I can also supply details on a few others supporters would like to see leave, if you ask me very, very nicely....

Arjan de Zeeuw was supposed to be the solid, experienced defender, whose knowledge of the game would help turn Elliott Ward into an England class international, while helping Coventry City back to the promised land of the Premiership. Sadly, the plan - as it usually does when we bring in experienced pros' - failed. While Ward does on occasion look decent enough (Though only as good as he did before De Zeeuw came to the club anyway), the reality is ADZ's time here has been .... not so worthwhile. His first appearance in the side coincided with Coventry City's first defeat of the season, and with that defeat a downward turn in our fortunes (Three of the results in his first four games being: 0-3 at home to Bristol City, 1-4 away to Ipswich, and 0-3 at home to Watford).

Michael Hughes came to Coventry City 'focused on helping Coventry City get back to the Premiership' and stated 'I would have hung up my boots if I thought I would see out his last few seasons going through the motions of mid-table mediocrity'. I'm guessing the last season isn't exactly what he had in mind! Has previous experience of a successful Championship campaign with Crystal Palace, but never looked likely to repeat that at the Arena. Little evidence of his reputation for 'lifting team-mates up by the boot-laces', or his 'natural leadership'. If he decides to continue for another season, will probably do a 'Colin Cameron' and excel in a League Two side. Has started fifteen times for Coventry City, plus has made two substitute appearances, scoring no goals.

Ellery Cairo was described as being an 'exciting signing' when he joined the club, but, like so many previous 'exciting signings' we've made in the past, he never got anywhere near to proving it. Started the season under-going a hernia operation, and only made it onto the pitch very occasionally after that (Claimed there was 'more to come' after his debut versus Notts County, but it obviously won't be here). There are rumours as to why he hasn't been involved recently, and, if anywhere near true, the club are better off without him.

Wayne Andrews helped save Mickey Adams' job with a goal minutes after coming onto the pitch versus Barnsley in the 2006/7 season (To this day some still don't understand that the booing was for who Adams was bringing off, not who he was bringing on!), and was also supposed to be part of an argument that led to Adams' down-fall! Scored a few quality goals in his time here, but never given a run in the side to prove his quality (Or otherwise), and is unlikely to be missed (Managing just eleven substitute appearances for Coventry City in his two seasons here). Wandered off to Bristol Rovers in the hopes of earning a contract with them for next season, but knacked his knee seventeen minutes into his debut!

Colin Hawkins has now been dropped twice by Coventry City! Brought in the previous season, enjoying sold performance after solid performance (With only one or two errors to his name), but missed almost the entire 2007/8 season through injury. Had he managed to avoid this, would have been a better option at the back than ADZ! One appearance for Coventry this season, in a League Cup fixture versus Notts County, and is currently on loan at Chesterfield, where he has so far helped them to a 3-0 and a 4-1 victory.

Stuart Giddings always looked as though he had enough quality to make the grade, but has had an absolute nightmare with injuries. And, while I would like to see him given a further year, the reality is he has probably been lucky to be given as long as he has been! Solid in the tackle, with a decent free-kick on him, he is exactly what the side needed (Before the arrival of Fox) .... but will now not get. Just to prove his consistency (For getting injured!), he limped off in the fixture against Shrewsbury.

Liam Davis is possibly the most disappointing of all the names on the 'to leave' list. Looked a tricky winger each time I've watched him in the reserves (Often being withdrawn due to having his ankles severely kicked!), and has even filled in for the first team at left-back this season, when the club have been down to their last three (Giddings (Occasionally), Hall, and Borrowdale).

Lee Hildreth has been described by those in the know as 'a good player but not yet first team material. He'll be okay at a League Two club or a Conference side'. Earned decent reviews in the last two reserve games, and will hopefully have done enough to impress any watching scouts. One unused substitute appearance to his name.

'I have been really impressed with my new team-mates .... even the young kids have got a hunger and all want it here, and you can feel an excitement about the place .... I am genuinely excited and enthusiastic about being at Coventry because I believe something good can happen this season' - Michael Hughes, July 2007.

'With Julian Gray and me, Coventry have real wingers now and we both have quite a lot of pace and I think that could be attractive for the fans and be good for the team' - Ellery Cairo, August 2007.
