Relegation Watch!
By CovSid67 April 6 2008
Short of some seriously unlikely results, two of the three unwanted bottom-of-the-table places already look filled. The very late goal conceded versus Sheffield Wednesday, and a sloppy late goal conceded against Watford, means the brown smelly stuff is still far to close for comfort for Coventry City.

How the relegation threatned teams fared yesterday....

Norwich (Up 1): Former Coventry City striker Dion Dublin helped Norwich to victory with a goal after a mere two minutes. A class second from Evans after 90 minutes made the game, and more than likely Norwich's Championship place, safe for next season.

Blackpool (Down 1): No fixture due to WBA's F.A. Cup semi-final losing exploits (Which thankfully means we won't have to put up with re-run after re-run of our drubbing in the 5th Round of the competition come Cup Final day), with said fixture being played on Tuesday (Blackpool are at home).

Coventry (No change): Mugged! The second half belonged to Coventry City, but one typical Route One Watford effort, and a mistake from the usually flawless Fox, saw the home side steal the points, and leave Coventry still waiting to confirm their Championship place for next season.

Southampton (Up 3): Former Coventry striker Stern John won the battle of the ex-Coventry City strikers (With Adebola failing to make it three goals in three games), scoring his sides first goal in over five hours of football, and denting Bristol City's automatic promotion hopes (How different things might have been had his early injury forced him to leave the pitch!). Euell added their second, moving them out of the bottom three. The Saints goal difference is still four worse than Coventry's.

Leicester (Down 1): Robbed by a terrible refereeing decision, which saw the most blatant dive this season, from Sheffield United's Billy Sharp (Who seems to get away with more than his fair share of controversial incidents), earning Kisnorbo a red card, and SU a penalty. Beattie's original effort was saved, though he was first to the rebound to make the score 1-0, and within seven more minutes, had scored a hat-trick!

Sheffield Wednesday (Down 1): Drew their fifth game on the trot, as they try to edge their way to safety one point at a time, in part thanks to Sahar's lucky deflected goal. Play their game in hand against hated rivals Sheffield United this Tuesday.

Barnsley (Down 1): Dropped into the relegation zone, in part due to being otherwise engaged in semi-final business, though now have two games in hand on may of the sides looking to avoid the bottom three positions - one of which is away to Watford this Wednesday.

Scunthorpe (No change): Look doomed, though things might have looked better for them had McCann's late effort gone in, rather than bouncing away to safety after hitting the post. Took the lead through Morris's cracking long-distance effort, but were denied the points due to a lucky SW equaliser. Ten points away from Coventry City, with twelve left to play for, with an inferior goal difference (-23 against -12).

Colchester (No change): A decent win against an Ipswich side looking for a play-off spot, but a case of 'to little to late' - despite the after-match interviewer for the Championship's TV programme asking manager Geraint Williams if this was 'just delaying the inevitable?'! (Eleven points off fourth from bottom, with four games to play, and a vastly inferior goal difference? You work it out!). Not a result that concerns Coventry City anyway, though Clochester can help us by winning fixtures against other strugglers (And by losing to us on the 19th!).

As for those coming up and down, white seems to be the colour! Derby and Fulham look doomed, while Bolton will need to put in a few Allardyce-esque displays to save themselves from the drop too. Swansea blew their chance to as good as confirm their place in the Championship next season, managing to concede two very late goals to relegation threatened (Not to mention existence threatened!) Bournemouth.
