Fletcher Gets His Man
By CovSid67 February 19 2007
So, after the abject surrender that was our display against rivals Leicester, and our feeble attempts to stay above them in the table, some good news - Iain Dowie is now in charge of Coventry City.
Equally as good a piece of news is that Coventry City supporting Tim Flowers has been draughted in as Dowie's assistant, and as goalkeeping coach (Surely a better option than Andy Dibble?!). Manchester City's loss is our gain - though with Flowers apparently witnessing our (Lack of) performance at The Walkers Stadium at the weekend, he could have been forgiven for phoning Stuart Pearce and asking for his job back!

These appointments weren't supposed to happen for a few more days, but, having set out the time-frame and criteria, things were move on apace as it became aware that we were not the only side after Dowie (Had we beaten Leicester, there might have been even more of rush to land Dowie!). The bringing forward of these events at least gave some Coventry supporters something to moan about....

Despite the insistence of one reporter trying to ask Dowie about the Leicester job rather than the job he had actually taken, he said all the right things at the press conference, giving anybody that thinks he isn't the man for the job little by way of ammunition so far (As somebody currently looking for a job, asking new managers the dumbest question(s) possible seems like a decent way to earn a living - just not sure where to apply).

During the interview, Dowie revealed that he had knocked on the doors of the academy players at 7.15 this morning to wake them up - a nice touch, as at least it means he actually knows they exist. Having seen the youngsters leave the training ground this morning, they seemed to be in high spirits. Wonder if the two things are linked?

Having watched SSN, and being temporarily without work, watching the new man put the squad through their paces seemed a good idea - wrapping up properly rather than dressing for the summer would also have been a good idea! Hindsight's a wonderful thing....

Having stood around in the cold, waiting for far longer than I would normally have to, the players took to the training pitch, and were given a more rigorous work-out than I've witnessed recently. If today was anything to go by, the players will not be having it quite so easy as recent training sessions under 'other managers' have looked to me. Thankfully, they seemed to enjoy it.

First impressions would also suggest Tim Flowers is the 'good cop' to Dowie's 'not so nice cop'! Instructions barked by Dowie weren't exactly rocket science (Dowie is, incidentally, qualified to be a rocket scientist!), but were some of the basics that have been lacking from our play for longer than I care to remember.

We're often told that players have looked good all week in training, and it's fair to say they impressed today - now let's see if we can transfer it onto a proper pitch, against proper opposition.

Dowie has two tricky fixtures to start with, at home to Southampton, and away to Norwich, and any points taken from these matches will be regarded as a bonus by me. Then the real hard work starts, when he has more of an idea about the players at his disposal. I only hope he gets away from the annoying habit that so many previous managers have insisted on doing, which is playing people out of position.

Nearly every other team seems to have a 'honeymoon period' when a new manager comes in, so let's hope it's our turn, as we are far to close to the bottom three for comfort, and could really do with picking up some points....
