City don't often sign trialists, the main reason being that the majority who sign permanently turn out to be a big disappointment....Rory May for example, however, the Imps are considering bringing Ashley Westwood to the club on a permanent basis. Westwood played in a reserve game on Tuesday afternoon at Nottingham Forest, and despite being part of a defence that conceded three goals, Grant Brown was still impressed with the former Manchester United player.
"He's someone the gaffer knows" Brown told the Echo. "He's a good, experienced player and was a calming influence on the back four, which has been quite inexperienced at times this season. It was good to play him alongside one of the young lads, Luca Coleman-Carr, who will have learned a lot."
"He (Westwood) hasn't played for four weeks so that's something you have to take into account. But he did well. Where we'll take it from here, I'm not sure, that's down to the gaffer. It's put him in the shop window for other clubs possibly, too. He could have other options and I believe he's spoken to a club in Belgium."
Westwood has a good track record, winning promotion with four sides, two of whom were from League Two, Northampton Town in 2005/6 and Swindon Town in 2006/7. He is also part of Manchester United's Youth Cup winning side of 1994/5....an otherwise trophyless for United.
City have a few players signed after impressive trial spells currently playing in the first team, namely Adrian Patulea and Aaron Brown. Other names to have been signed after trials in recent years include Ryan Amoo, Rory May and Ellis Remy.
