City kicked off the game and created the first chance, Ryan Bennett clearing Stefan Oakes' free kick after Aaron Brown had been fouled. City were on top and almost took the lead when Oakes looked to pounce on a parry by Barnes before Newey cleared from Kevin Gall. It was a promising start for the Imps before Paul Green was fouled by Hegarty, the Grimsby man picking up a booking for his trouble.

Jarman headed straight at Burch but that was a rare attack as City were generally the better side. Ben Wright almost forced the visitors into a mistake when he pressured Bennett to almost head past Barnes for an own goal. Newey sent another shot straight at Burch before John-Lewis headed an Oakes corner against the bar.

It was at this point that Grimsby began to take control and Peter Till raced clear of the defence, Burch claiming at this feet. It wasn't long before Grimsby took the lead when the ever-breakable defence of Lincoln City allowed Till time and space to curve the ball around Burch, giving the Mariners a goal they hadn't deserved up until that point.

The half time whilst was coming up but City were certainly not playing well and Grimsby were continuing to enjoy their spell in the game and Boshell shot just wide of the target. Till had the first half's final chance when he again broke through the defence, Burch producing a fine save to deny him his second and the Imps went into half time just one goal down.

Paul Green came close to his third goal in an Imps shirt within 90 seconds of the second half, blasting over from 25 yards out before Newey was booked for fouling N'Guessan. Wright shot straight at Barnes from the edge of the box and City were bossing the second half. LJL headed a Frecklington set-piece over the bar. N'Guessan gained revenge on Newey for the aforementioned foul, getting a yellow card in the protest.

Frank Sinclair has a reputation of scoring own goals and he came within inches of scoring his first "for" the Imps. He headed against the underside of his own bar and many will still fail to know how it stayed out, especially as Hegarty was 6 feet out when his follow up missed the target.

Ben Wright thought he had is first League goal of the season when City's first piece of footballing skill saw the striker tap in with his right foot, it was ruled out for offside though. This saw several Grimsby Town fans invade the pitch and cause several minutes of stopages. Sinclair was booked for the Imps before Gall was taken off for Sam Mullarky.

City won a penalty within a minute of the substitution, Mullarkey being fouled from behind and the Imps had their first penalty of the season. Lee Frecklington stepped up and smashed it into the net for his first of the season and only the Imps' second League goal so far. Llwellyn came on for Heslop for the visitors.

The Imps were now the dominant force and City were forcing corner after corner before John-Lewis fired just wide from 25 yards. N'Guessan made way for Graham but neither side could come up with a winner.
