We've met recently : Grimsby Town
By Nathan Jackson
August 27 2008
The Imps and Grimsby have certainly met a fair few times in the last four years. The Mariners entered League Two in 2004 and have a generally good record against City in that time, including beating the Imps over two legs in the 2005/6 Playoffs, but this report looks at all the games between the sides since then.

DECEMBER 29TH 2004

LINCOLN CITY 0 GRIMSBY TOWN 0

City are very fortunate to come out of this eagerly anticipated clash with the Mariners with a point. In what is a generally even game, the visitors had a goal disallowed in the final minute of added on time for offside, that despite several players appearing to be between Martin Gritton and the goal.

Lincoln City's squad : Alan Marriott, Jamie McCombe, Paul Morgan, Ben Futcher, Matt Bloomer, Richard Butcher, Ciaran Toner, Kevin Sandwith, Francis Green, Marcus Richardson, Simon Yeo, Ritchie Hanlon (for Toner, 75), Martin Carruthers (for Richardson, 72)

Grimsby Town's squad : Williams, Whittle, Ramsden, Jones, McDermott, Crowe, Fleming, Bull, Gritton, Sestanovich, Parkinson, Reddy (for Parkinson, 67), Pinault (for Whittle, 86)

The Imps put in a season-turning performance at Blundell Park. City were heading for midtable mediocrity before this game. Simon Yeo opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Simon Yeo volleyed home following an Alan Marriott free kick. He doubled his tally fourteen minutes later when he capitalised on Grimsby's defence failing to clear the ball, although Mariners' fans were adament Gary Taylor-Fletcher had handled the ball during the build up.

Grimsby score twice in nine minutes in the second half thanks to efforts from Pinault and Coldicott, but parity lasts less than a minute as Simon Yeo becomes the first City player to score a League hatrick since 1997, volleying home Gary Taylor-Fletcher's cross. Ciaran Toner completed the scoring for the Imps with his first goal for City in the 71st minute, again capitalising on a defensive mix-up.

Grimsby Town's squad : Williams, Ramsden, Forbes, Jones, McDermott, Fleming, Coldicott, Young, Parkingson, Reddy, Gritton, Pinault (for Young, 45)

Lincoln City's squad : Alan Marriott, Jamie McCombe, Paul Morgan, Gareth McAuley, Matt Bloomer, Kevin Sandwith, Ciaran Toner, Richard Butcher, Simon Yeo, Craig Westcarr, Gary Taylor-Fletcher, Peter Gain (for Simon Yeo, 73)

City are dire in this game. The Mariners are 3-0 up at half time. Ciaran Toner had left the Imps soon after the 4-2 game in the previous season, joining Grimsby in the summer and he showed City what they were missing, hitting home a sweet effort from an acure angle with good technique. Michael Reddy doubled the lead on 25 minutes with a close range effort before Andy Parkinson blasted home from 25 yards just before half time. Heavy snow couldn't hide a pathetic City display.

Grimsby Town's squad : Mildenhall, Croft, Whittle, Rob Jones, Newey, Cohen, Toner, Bolland, Parkinson, Reddy, Gary Jones, Ramsden (for Croft, 85), Hegarty (for Reddy, 88)

Lincoln City's squad : Alan Marriott, Gareth McAuley, Jamie McCombe, Colin Cryan, Lee Beevers, Paul Mayo, Scott Kerr, Luke Foster, Derek Asamoah, Richard Logan, Nat Brown, Matt Bloomer (for Beevers, 33), Marvin Robinson (for Asamoah, 45)

City had remained unbeaten from that thrashing at Blundell Park up until a week before this game. Both sides were in the promotion hunt and Luke Foster scored his only goal for the Imps on the 13th minute by backheading Paul Mayo's throw towards the backpost. Jamie Forrester, making his debut on loan from Bristol Rovers, scored a spectacular second when he lobbed Mildenhall from 35 yards.

Paul Mayo converted a penalty in the 38th minute following a foul on Robinson by Mildenhall, Francis Green hit the bar just seconds before Lee Beevers crossed in the ball for Marvin Robinson to make it 4-0 before half time. Russell Slade gave his half-time team-"talk" on the pitch and Grimsby did do better in the second half, only conceding once more, Beevers' effort deflected off of Futcher and into the net to give City a 5-0 win.

Lincoln City's squad : Alan Marriott, Colin Cryan, Jamie McCombe, Nat Brown, Paul Mayo, Lee Beevers, Scott Kerr, Francis Green, Jamie Forrester, Marvin Robinson, Lee Frecklington (for Kerr, 84), Gary Birch (for Marvin Robinson, 71), Martin Gritton (for Forrester, 78)

PLAYOFF SEMI-FINAL 1ST LEG

A less than inspiring 1st leg sees City have two early goals disallowed, one for a foul and the other for offside. City dominate early on but Gary Jones scored out of the blue and that's pretty much all the action for the whole game as neither side threaten to score after this.

Lincoln City's squad : Alan Marriott, Gareth McAuley, Paul Morgan, Jamie McCombe, Jeff Hughes, Lee Beevers, Scott Kerr, Nat Brown, Marvin Robinson, Jamie Forrester, Francis Green, Lee Frecklington (for Beevers, 60), Gary Birch (for Robinson, 76), Simon Yeo (for Green, 60).

Grimsby Town's squad : Mildenhall, McDermott, Futcher, Whittle, Newey, Cohen, Bolland, Woodhouse, Parkinson, Gary Jones, Junior Mendes, Croft (for McDermott, 18), Reddy (for Cohen, 68), Ciaran Toner ( for Mendes, 78)

PLAYOFF SEMI-FINAL 2ND LEG

Trailing from the first leg, it takes the Imps a while to get back into the tie and it's only the substitution of Rob Jones for the host that changes the game. Him being off the pitch allows Marvin Robinson to be unmarked and score an equaliser for the Imps following a free kick, it would prove to be his last goal in what turned out to be his last game for the Imps.

City never really look like scoring again but Grimsby retake the lead overall out of the blue, Ben Futcher tapping in at the near post and City are officially beaten when Gary Jones heads into the net to send the Mariners to the Millennium Stadium, although he was lucky to go himself as the Imps agreed to rescind the red card he gained in the 90th minute. Grimsby lost the final to Cheltenham Town after doing the double over them during the season.

Grimsby Town's squad : Mildenhall, Croft, Whittle, Rob Jones, Newey, Cohen, Bolland, Woodhouse, Parkinson, Gary Jones, Mendes, Futcher (for Rob Jones, 28), Reddy (for Cohen, 59), Toner (for Mendes, 76)

Lincoln City's squad : Alan Marriott, Gareth McAuley, Paul Morgan, Jamie McCombe, Lee Beevers, Scott Kerr, Nat Brown, Jeff Hughes, Jamie Forrester, Marvin Robinson, Simon Yeo, Paul Mayo (for McCombe, 86), Francis Green (for Lee Beevers, 74), Lee Frecklington (for Kerr, 77)

17TH OCTOBER 2006

LINCOLN CITY 0 GRIMSBY TOWN 0 (GRIMSBY WIN 5-3 ON PENALTIES)

JOHNSTONE'S PAINT TROPHY 1ST ROUND

Many Imps fans forget that this game came inbetween a 5-0 win at Barnet and the 7-1 thrashing of Rochdale. City never look like scoring in this game and Simon Rayner has to pull off several excellent saves to deny Peter Bore for the visitors. The game goes to penalties, Grimsby converting all five of their's with Jamie Forrester missing for the Imps.

Lincoln City's squad : Alan Marriott, Colin Cryan, Lee Beevers, Nat Brown, Paul Mayo, Ryan Amoo, Lee Frecklington, Scott Kerr, Martin Gritton, Oliver Ryan, Leon Mettam, Simon Rayner (for Marriott, 26), Mark Stallard (for Ryan, 68), Jamie Forrester (for Mettam, 68)

Grimsby Town's squad : Barnes, McDermott, Fenton, Whittle, Newey, Toner, Ravenhill, Boshell, Bore, Jones, Hegarty, Croft (for McDermott, 59), Thorpe (for Bore, 74)

16TH DECEMBER 2006

LINCOLN CITY 2 GRIMSBY TOWN 0

Grimsby are surprisingly poor and the Imps dominate the game, it comes as no surprise when Jamie Forrester gives City a lead from close range just before half time. Lee Frecklington doubles the lead just 17 minutes from time as City make light work of their rivals, sparking off a run of four straight wins in the process. Gary Jones is sent off again for Grimsby.

Lincoln City's squad : Alan Marriott, Nicky Eaden, Paul Morgan, Nat Brown, Shane Nicholson, Lee Beevers, Lee Frecklington, Scott Kerr, Ryan Amoo, Martin Gritton, Jamie Forrester, Adie Moses (for Brown, 85), Jeff Hughes (for Nicholson, 75), Mat Birley (for Kerr, 88)

Grimsby Town's squad : Barnes, Croft, Whittle, Jones, Newey, Bore, Ravenhill, Pulis, Hegarty, Rankin, Paterson, Harkins (for Bore, 57), Reddy (for Hegarty, 61), Boshell (for Rankin, 69)

28TH APRIL 2007

GRIMSBY TOWN 0 LINCOLN CITY 0

A dull, lifeless appear sees very few chances for either side in a game that effectively secure City's final failure at the Playoffs. The game will be remembered most for it being McDermott's last ever game at Blundell Park for the hosts.

Grimsby Town's squad : Barnes, McDermott, Bennett, Fenton, Newey, Till, Boshell, Harkins, Toner, Jones, North, Bloomer (for McDermott, 66), Taylor (for Harkins, 70), Hegarty (for Jones, 81)

Lincoln City's Squad : Alan Marriott, Nicky Eaden, Paul Morgan, Paul Mayo, Paul Green, Junior Mendes, Lee Beevers, Scott Kerr, Jeff Hughes, Mark Stallard, Jamie Forrester, Lee Frecklington (for Mendes, 54), Oliver Ryan (for Forrester, 83)

22ND SEPTEMBER 2007

LINCOLN CITY 1 GRIMSBY TOWN 2

The first time that Grimsby score at Sincil Bank in the lead also leads in their first win. They take a 19th minute lead from a fortunate Whittle strike. The Imps are dreadful but score out of nowhere when Forrester finds himself unmarked in the area, hitting home just before half time. However, Grimsby secure the points for the visitors as Ciaran Toner scores the winner from the spot after 51 minutes.

Lincoln City's squad : Alan Marriott, Lee Beevers, Adie Moses, Nat Brown, Gary Croft, Louis Dodds, Lee Frecklington, Jamie Hand, Dany N'Guessan, Jamie Forrester, Steve Torpey, Ryan Amoo (for Croft, 59), Oliver Ryan (for Frecklington, 82), Mark Stallard (for Steve Torpey, 59)

Grimsby Town's squad : Barnes, Mulligan, Fenton, Whittle, Newey, Till, Bolland, Boshell, Hunt, Toner, Rankin, Clarke (for Hunt, 64), Jones (for Rankin, 80).

29TH DECEMBER 2007

GRIMSBY TOWN 1 LINCOLN CITY 0

Exactly three years after the first meeting comes the last. City are again awful and don't manage a single shot on target but Grimsby aren't that good either. It takes a typical Ben Smith mistake to seperate the sides as he palms the ball straight onto the head of Gary Jones to give the Mariners the points. Scott Kerr is sent off for City.

Grimsby Town squad : Barnes, Bennett, Atkinson, Newey, Hird, Bolland, Hunt, Boshell, Hegarty, North, Butler, Jones (for North, 65), Taylor (for Butler, 72)

Lincoln City squad : Ben Smith, Adie Moses, Nat Brown, Hamza Bencharif, Lee Beevers, Lenell John-Lewis, Lee Frecklington, Louis Dodds, Jamie Forrester, Ben Wright, Jamie Hand (for Frecklington, 79), Oliver Ryan (for Dodds, 73)
