Imps on the verge of creating history
By Nathan Jackson
August 25 2008
Lincoln City will create a new club record if they fail to pick up at least a point on Saturday. City face a difficult derby against a Grimsby Town side who have lost ten of their last eleven league games, stretching into last season, but should they defeat the Imps then it will be the worst start the Lincoln City have ever made to a season.

The Imps have lost their first three League games of the season, losing at Rotherham United and Wycombe Wanderers with a home defeat to Dagenham and Redbridge in between. Another defeat on Saturday will be the first time in Lincoln City's history that they will have suffered defeat in their opening four League games.

City have only come close to this on two previous occasions. The first was the 1959/60 season when the Imps lost their opening three games before winning at Portsmouth's Fratton Park. This was repeated 16 seasons ago when City again lost their first three, but won at Hereford United in the fourth game.

The Imps have recorded pointless Augusts before, but those were back in the days when there were only one or two games played in that month. There have also been a few occasions where City have only picked up one point from the opening four games, the most recent being in the 2003/4 season. That point came in a home game against Doncaster Rovers following a 0-0 draw, City had lost the first two games by a scoreline of 1-0 to Oxford United and Torquay United respectably. A 2-1 defeat at Bury just a week after the game against Doncaster gave City a less than impressive start to the season.

The team that can write this new page in City's history book is Grimsby Town. The Mariners are in need of all three points themselves. Their last win came at Mansfield Town on March 22nd, they lost all eight games after that in all competitions during the 2007/8 season. This season hasn't really seen much improvement, picking up just one point from their opening three League games.

Another entry into the record books for the Imps, then!

Or, will it be a draw?
