Steve Torpey was arguably the least popular signing that John Schofield and John Deehan made during their time at Sincil Bank. The vast, vast majority of fans were not impressed by a player who had his best days come and go a long time ago. His substitution at Doncaster Rovers saw a huge sarcastic cheer followed by a chorus of booing that signalled City fans weren't happy.
Torpey would win headers on quite a regular basis, but you'd be struggling to find many that went to a Lincoln City player. That combined with a general lack of effort on occasions was the reason he was mainly disliked.
It didn't take long for Jackson to realise that Torpey had no future at the club. Torpey lasted until half time in Jackson's second game before the former Scunthorpe striker was offloaded on loan to Farsley.
Overall, I think that Torpey was just too old to play at this level anymore. I don't think that his performances would have been much different even if he had put effort into every game.
