Captain Simon Amor
England Sevens retain their Dubai crown
England have retained the Emirates Airline Dubai Sevens Cup title in a nail
biting finish by beating Fiji 28- 26 in the final.
England put on a fine
performance in front of a crowd of 60,000 who enthusiastically backed the
England side, spurred on by captain Simon Amor, a battle-sharpened Ben Gollings
and benefitting immensely from the additional pace of wing Tom Varndell, but
with Daunivucu and Ryder in fine form Fiji were more than a match for Mike
Friday's men.
Fiji took an early lead, but
England drew level through speedster Varndell, Leawere hit back for Fiji,
only for Ben Gollings to score and convert for a 14-12 lead at the break.
In the second half Gollings touched down again for a 21-12 lead. Sireli Naqelevuki's try reduced the deficit to two points but Tom Varndell went over in the corner for his second of the match. Gollings vitally slotted the conversion for a 28-19 lead, which Fiji reduced to 28-26 but England's crown was assured..
