Virtual Sports Museum Launched

A new and unique way to see sports memorabilia.  If like me you don’t get much time to visit art galleries and museums due to a busy lifestyle, then you are going love this.  This virtual museum is host to one of the largest private collections of sporting memorabilia in the world

Simon Jones who has been involved in building the virtual museum explained to me the concept and its origins.  

Simon:  I have been involved in building a virtual museum housing some of the most important sports memorabilia in the UK .    It was commissioned by Nigel Wray, Chairman of Saracens & general sports nut, who owns the collection and it is a way of allowing members of the public to view his collection which ordinarily would be behind closed doors.  

Members can easily view memorabilia and art without having to visit a real museum and the zoom facilities mean you can view items more closely than the naked eye. Membership is free and there are many items on show;

·         Various art including one of the earliest paintings depicting a ‘rugby’  at Rugby School

·        Jason Robinson’s 1995 Rugby League final shirt and his 2003 Rugby World Cup final shirt (the one in which he scored the try)

·         A 1905 New Zealand shirt from their first tour of the UK

·         A 1906 South Africa shirt from their first tour to the UK

 Simon: There are also many other items covering cricket, football and the Olympics for those people who are lover of all things sporting. One Item that will be of particular interest perhaps to  South African Rugby Supporters is the handwritten diary  notes from the Vice Captain of the first South Africa touring side to the UK in 1905.  

They are called the Carolin Papers and it is just before the squad arrived at Southampton docks that the Springbok name was adopted. These papers are historically very important for obvious reasons and I am sure will be of interest to the South African supporters. We will be doing a documentary for a South African television station on the Papers and how they got into our grubby hands!!

The virtual museum is split into 4 main areas: Football, Cricket, Rugby , Olympics and Other Sports.  You will find a Room Map and Navigation plus picture zoom and description.  You can leave your comments and they have a blog also.
