Wasps’ Sue Day will captain England during their defence of the RBS 6 Nations championship which gets underway against Scotland on February 3rd at Old Albanians RFC in St. Albans, kick-off 2.30pm.
Day is one of England’s most experienced players with 54 caps, 57 tries and three Rugby World Cups under her belt. The 34-year-old takes over the captaincy arm-band from Worcester’s Jo Yapp, who is currently taking a sabbatical.
England Women’s Head Coach Geoff Richards said: “As captain Sue will add a lot of stability to the side. She is playing really well at the moment but she is also a mature player with a lot of experience. She has captained Wasps on several occasions and has proved herself as a tremendous leader. Sue also commands tremendous respect from the players so she is an ideal candidate for captain.”
Richards added: “Although we have eight new caps in the 22 and three in the starting side I believe this to be a very strong 22 and I am looking forward to the RBS 6 Nations kicking off. This is going to be a tough tournament and playing Scotland first will be difficult. Like us they have had a lot of players retire after the World Cup and generally across the board, most teams are rebuilding but that I think will make for a very exciting RBS 6 Nations. However, we are obviously going into this tournament to defend out Six Nations crown and I am confident we can do that.

Sue Day - England Women's Captain
Day said: “Obviously I feel hugely honoured to be captaining the squad, but more than anything I'm feeling very excited about the games coming up. I really think this is going to be a thriller of a tournament.
“It's always tough playing Scotland. They always have a very strong pack who play with a lot of passion and commitment and they have some exciting runners out wide. Clearly it will be a big challenge opening our campaign against them but it's the challenge that we’ll be relishing.
