After losing the toss and being put in on a belter of a track at Heanor, Hessey and Brear who to this point were averaging 90 for the 1st wicket this season, set out for an afternoons batting. They took the score to 79 when Brear smashed a full toss from Parsons to mid on for 45 from 48 balls. He had struck 5 fours and a six. In the process Brear passed the 600 run mark which is a fine effort by any standard. Harchuk promoted to 3 went in for his first 1st team bat since May 8th looked out of touch from the word go. He has reached 10 when he went after the leg spin of Womble and was caught and deep mid on. It was a 2nd catch for Steve Bennett. In came Mark Prance and after a sticky start, started to really show form. Hessey who had opened was still there and was taking advantage of some loose bowling from the young leg spinner Womble. Hessey was looking particularly strong through the leg side and Steve Bennett who had bowled well early on, came back to a barrage as he went for 29 in his 3 over spell. Back came Womble into the attack and had his revenge on Hessey as he went back to cut and was out to a good catch by Holmes standing up. Hessey went for a fine 89 from 111 balls. He had hit 13 fours and 2 sixes and deserved a century. Prance was still motoring along. He was joined by Dean Shaw who put Womble back over his head for a massive straight six. The returning Swannack ended Shaws knock as he has him caught at cover for 19 from 12 balls. Prance passed 50 with ease and in the late dash for runs, Prance fell to a fine catch at square leg by Hendley. Prance had made a fine 59 from 70 balls. Heanor had made 257-5 from their 46 overs. Clowne’s best bowlers were Swannack (2-47 off 11) and young Josh Womble who showed promise during his 9 overs 2-63.
After another fine tea by Mrs Turner, Clowne got off to an awful start, losing 2 wickets without a run on the board in the returning Andy Mann’s opening over. Adam White was caught behind by Hessey from Mann’s 1st ball and Chris Hendley fell lbw to his 2nd ball to leave Clowne at 0-2. Mann was returning from a ban imposed by the league last season. Smalley who had opened, was still there and put on a fine partnership with Holmes of 60, until Colin Taylor found a faint glove and fell to a fine catch by Hessey behind for 27. In came Womble who stuck around in a partnership of 39 with Holmes, fell caught at mid wicket by Dick Owen off Adam Harchuk for 15. Now came a Clowne collapse as Thompson, Parker, Bennett, Parsons and Swannack all fell cheaply to leave Clowne 150-9. All this time Captain Ben Holmes was still there. He had played a really fine innings and was very strong through the covers against the Heanor bowlers who overpitched far too often. He had to marshall the strike during the closing overs, protecting the Clowne tail. Pollard survived the last 3 balls of the 45th over to leave Holmes to face the last over bowled by Harchuk. Holmes survived it and had saved his side from defeat with a fine unbeaten 73 which included 10 fours. He did well shielding Swannack and Pollard from the bowling and deserved to lead his side from defeat. Clowne finished on 153-9. As for Heanor Andy Mann bowled brilliantly on his return with 4-41 from 14 and the evergreen Colin Taylor 4-34 from 14 but it wasn’t enough as Clownes resisted all thrown at them, if not by just the skin of their teeth!
