Giggs' late header secures point at Parkhead

Equaliser from Giggs
By Chris,
November 7 2008
A late goal from Ryan Giggs at Celtic Park has virtually assured Manchester United’s safe passage into the knock-out stages of the European Cup. The Welshman’s goal cancelled out Scott McDonald’s first-half opener for the Bhoys and keeps United’s unbeaten record in Europe this season intact.

Parkhead erupted on thirteen minutes as McDonald's sweet lob beat Ben Foster and sent Celtic into a one-goal leader.

However, United went onto control the second-half for long periods but had to wait until the 84th-minute to restore parity as Giggs nodded home his third goal of the season. He took advantage after Artur Boruc parried an effort from Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Red Devils didn't deserve to leave Glasgow empty-handed after creating a hatful of chances. Dimitar Berbatov nearly snatched the visitors a dramatic winner in the dying seconds as his shot, on the turn, glanced inches beyond the post.

United were sporting their all-blue jersey for this one - with the club keen to wear the 40-year anniversary kit of the 1968 triumph as often as possible. Has nobody told them that the 40th anniversary of out first European Cup success was actually last season? - with the 2007/2008 campaign being forty years after the 1967/1968 campaign.

Anyway, this was a decent result on the backdrop of an electric Celtic Park atmosphere.

Only a bizarre stage of events could stop United qualifying for the last 16 now - including a heavy Aalborg victory at Old Trafford in a few weeks time.

Full Time - Glasgow Celtic 1-1 Manchester United
Attendance - 58,903
