Lazio memories will spur Fergie on in Super Cup

Fergie wants to win it
By Chris, August 26 2008
The memory of Lazio celebrating with the Uefa Super Cup trophy in 1999 will push Sir Alex Ferguson to take Friday's game in Monaco as seriously as possible. The Italians beat a half-strength United side 1-0 some nine seasons ago. Victory for the Red Devils over Zenit St Petersburg will see Fergie become the first manager to win the competition on three occasions.

Fergie won the trophy in 1983 with Aberdeen and in 1991 with Manchester United.

However, he failed to claim a Super Cup hat-trick nine years ago with a half-strength United side losing 1-0 to Lazio at the Stade Louis II. Marcelo Salas' first-half strike settled the contest.

United had a crucial league encounter just three days later -so Fergie made plenty of changes. The likes of Raimond van der Gouw and Henning Berg started for United, with John Curtis and Jonathan Greening introduced from the substitute's bench.

Memories of that night will force Fergie to take the game as seriously as possible. It also helps that United's next fixture after the Super Cup is over a fortnight away - which is the trip to Anfield on September 13th.

"I want to win," said Fergie.

"I remember the last time we went there I only played half a team because we had a Monday league game against Newcastle.

"When I saw Lazio celebrating at the end, it was like they had won the World Cup. I was not too pleased. I thought, 'That will not happen again'."

Victory would secure United a second piece of silverware for the season following the Community Shield triumph, or a third if you count the Vodacom Challenge Cup in South Africa.

I can see a strong team being played.

What SAF will want to do is get a convincing display and result in order to boost the morale and silent all the critics.

Hardgreaves is avalibale as is Anderson and Nani. It should be intresting. I can see Posseborm starting as well.

Opinions of the importance of this match?

For me, any match with proper silverware on the line is important.

Of course, it's not the F.A Cup or the Champions League - but it's great to be involved and winning trophies is also a huge morale boost.

We're playing on seven fronts this season (eight if you count the Vodacom Cup, lol!) - we've already got the Community Shield in the bag and I'd love to make it a double.

Think we might find it difficult though.
Zenit are a decent side and destroyed Rangers in the Uefa Cup final.
