Politicians pushing Fergie for Team GB job

British boss?
By Chris, August 26 2008
Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe has said that Sir Alex Ferguson is the best man to manage a Great British football side at the 2012 Olympic Games, whilst Gordon Brown has spoken to the United boss about the role. Thus far, Fergie has remained lukewarm on suggestions that he could take the post and wasn't prepared to make such a long-term commitment.

Ferguson has emerged as the leading candidate to manage a British football team at the 2012 Olympic Games.

The idea itself has caused huge controversy. The Scottish FA has opposed the idea from the beginning, and football authorities in Wales are less than enthusiastic.

However, the government and the FA seem determined to push forward the idea - and Sutcliffe believes Sir Alex should lead Team GB in such a tournament.

"Sir Alex's record shows that he would be the ideal choice for manager." he said.

Meanwhile, in an interview with the BBC, PM Brown said: "I have talked to Sir Alex Ferguson about managing the team,

"He would have to be approached formally by the relevant authorities but he's been one of the names mentioned and he's not turned the job down."

Sir Alex has, thus far, proved indifferent to the suggestion. He'll be seventy in 2012 and doesn't want to commit to something that is four years away.

Should ‘Team GB' enter a football team into the London Games? Is SAF the right man for the job? Have your say on the messageboard.
