Ronaldo undecided on his future

Real or United?
By Chris, June 2 2008
Speculation continues to circulate regarding the future of Cristiano Ronaldo. Sir Alex Ferguson has threatened to report Real Madrid for supposedly ‘tapping up’ the winger. The Manchester United boss has also said that he and the club’s controversial owners would rather let the free-scoring superstar sit in the stands that sell him to one of the club’s biggest rivals for European honours.

Ronaldo has sparked reports that he wants to leave Manchester United over the summer after telling the Portuguese media that he would clarify his future over the next "two or three days".

‘Ronny' declared that "he was staying" moments after the Champions League final - but seemingly that statement was pressed by the euphoria of the moment. Doubts have again been raised about the player's commitment to United.

The 23-year-old has consistently said that he wishes to play in Spain at some stage in his career. However, he is tied into a four-year deal at Old Trafford and the Red Devils have no desire to let their top performer leave the club.

Madrid have made no secret of their desire to sign Ronaldo - and their public interest in the player has left Ferguson fuming. The United boss has said that he will have "no alternative but to report Real" to FIFA if they continue in their pursuit of the player without the club's permission.

Ferguson is adamant that neither he, nor the Glazer family, have any intention of letting Ronaldo join the La Liga giants. Speaking on the Glazers, Fergie said: "They'd sit a player in the stand, I'm telling you, absolutely no doubt about it, just to prove a point."

Real have signed David Beckham, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Gabriel Heinze from us in recent years - but prising Ronaldo away from Lancashire would be an even more impressive coup.
