United and Chelsea neck-and-neck at final hurdle

Can Utd do it?
By Chris, May 7 2008
Manchester United and Chelsea go into the final day of the Premier League season level-pegging on points. The Blues secured a 2-0 win at Newcastle on Bank Holiday Monday which kept the race for the league championship very much alive. Both sides are on 84 points with United’s vastly superior goal difference keeping them favourites for the title.

The Red Devils go to Wigan on the final day, with Chelsea entertaining struggling Bolton.

Credit must go to Avram Grant's men for securing a 2-0 win at St.James' Park. Under immense pressure to secure the three points, Michael Ballack and Florent Malouda found the net after half-time to send the away fans into raptures.

It really is going down to the wire. United's superior goal difference makes us heavy favourites - priced at 1/5 - with the bookmakers. However, an away trip to the JJB Stadium is rarely easy and Latics boss Steve Bruce will undoubtedly put sentiment aside as he looks to improve on an impressive run of league form.

On paper, Chelsea are set for an easier afternoon as they play host to Gary Megson's side. The Trotters are virtually safe from relegation and can go into the game knowing that only a mathematical miracle will send them into the Championship.

However, with their safety virtually assured, will Bolton fans be hoping for a Chelsea win? They regard United as their most prominent rivals and will not enjoy seeing Sir Alex Ferguson lift yet more silverware. The whole thing has slight echoes of 1995 and Liverpool fans wearing blue scarves to Anfield as Blackburn won the league title.
