Pete Halts Alty |
| A fantastic performance mainly by Peter Cumiskey stopped Altrincham progressing any
further in this competition. Some fans may see this as an unimportant game, but a win-is-a-win
when your lying near the bottom of the table. Hopefully Vauxhall can take all the possitives
out of this game and start picking up much needed points in the league.
Former Vauxhall legend Alvin McDonald and his assistant Peter Carroll made the trip to Manchester for this cup game. The Motormen came out in great spirit and shown what football they are really capable of playing. It took only 12 minutes for Vauxhall to deservedly take an early advantage. Terry Fearns and Peter Cumiskey linked up well that saw "Wacker" hit an unstoppable 20 yard strike straight into the back of the net. Vauxhall were playing well and dealing with everything that was thrown at them. The visitors continued to play some good attacking football but were unable to double their lead at this stage in the game. Half Time: Altrincham 0-1 Vauxhall Motors After probably an easy team talk at half time their was nothing Owen Brown could surely say other than "keep it up!!" The Motormen continued where they left off and created two good chances. The visitors hit the bar on both occasions and they must of been thinking it was not going to be their day. Carl Nesbitt then picked up the ball in the last third and played it to Peter Cumiskey who curled his shot into the top corner to claim his brace, and make it look very likely that it would be Vauxhall in the hat for the Quarter Final and not Alty. However, Alty hit back on 64 minutes when a race between Motors' shot stopper Mike Kinsella and Hardy saw the striker came of the better who headed home into an empty net. Former Vauxhall Defender/Midfielder Steve Aspinall set up Hardy's goal and had quite a good game at right back for Alty. Vauxhall continued what they had done all evening, played good football. Carl Nesbitt could of wrapped the game up when he pulled out a good save from Acton. New recruit Dawes came on as a sub and could of scored if he had managed to keep his volley down. Despite conceeding a goal from a long ball over the top manager Owen Brown was delighted with his teams performance. 'Altrincham are a good side and were unbeaten in their last 14 matches but once again we gave away a festive gift of a goal but my missus took the Christmas decorations down today so hopefully that's the end of the presents.' Full Time: Altrincham 1-2 Vauxhall Motors Man of the Match: Peter Cumiskey for an excellent performance and two fantastic goals Teams: Motors: Kinsella, Spellman, Mc-Dermott, Robinson, Griffiths (Dawes 82), Lynch, Nesbitt, Lawton, Fearns, McCann (Ward 88), Cumiskey. |
