Fearns Brace Not Enough |
| Owen Brown's first game in charge ended in a 4-2 defeat despite being 2-0 up at half
time. Brown had no time to see how the players performed in training as he took the vacancy a day
before this fixture.
Vauxhall came out and started playing well and were quickly rewarded with the early advantage when Terry Fearns headed home a superb cross from Motors' Kevin Lynch. The goalscorer Terry Fearns could of had another two goals to his name but on both occasions he was denied by Droylsden shot stopper Phillips. The home side continued to dominate the game and in the 43rd minute Fearns grabbed his brace by latching on to a cross from Carl Nesbitt. The delighted manager, Owen Brown, looked to be on track for his first win in his opening game in charge. Half Time: Vauxhall Motors 2-0 Droylsden The Droylsden boss must have had a strong team talk in the dressing room at half time as they came out alot sharper than the hosts. A corner in the 58th minute was swung towards the near post where Murphy got in front of his marker and headed home just before the hour mark. In the 65th minute the visitors levelled proceedings when another set piece proved to be a problem for Vauxhall to clear, as a free kick was met by the head of Droysden centre half Burke, who glanced a header beyond Hilton and into the back of the net. On 74 minutes the game took another turn for the worse from a Vauxhall point of view when Byrne fired a low shot passed Hilton in The Motormen's goal. Twelve minutes from time a header six yards out from Chambers ensured the points were going back to Buchers Arms and what started brightly for Motors ended in a dull second half display. Full Time: Vauxhall Motors 2-4 Droylsden Man of the Match: Two well taken goals from Motors' top scorer Terry Fearns grants him this award New manager Owen Brown summarised the game in an interview with the Pioneer by saying "Droylsden are a good side and in the first half we made them look very ordinary. But mistakes began to creep into our game in the second half. We have improved and there are lots of good points to work on and we also scored two good goals" "There is a lot of quality in our side and we played some good football. Now it's a case of working on the positive points" he added. Teams: Motors: Hilton, Ward, McDermott, Robinson, Whelan, Lynch, Nesbitt, Lawton, , Norman, Cumisky. Subs: Kissock, Griffiths, Rigby.
