Tigers Take Thriller |
| The week went from bad to worse at Babbage Way on Saturday (4th Oct)
Firstly Alvin McDonald leaves for Wincham Park to join Phil Brazier at Northwich
Victoria. Then just four days later Vauxhall threw away a 3-2 lead at half-time.
The home side took the after little more than two minutes when a trough ball from Whitehead found Matt Caudwell who slotted past Andy Ralph. Not the start Vauxhall wanted as they prepared for life after Alvin. Ralph was on hand to make a string of saves within the next few minutes, keeping out Bambrook and a couple of Townsend efforts. Davies picked out Townsend with a good cross, only for headed effort to bounce back off the bar. The Tigers did however double their advantage by the 15th minute, when ex-Southampton defender Richard Dyrden was pushed by Nicky Young, and the referee immediately pointed to the spot. Simeon Bambrook made no mistake from the spot. Young fired his second league goal of the season with a great free-kick that Roberto Carlos and Becks would be proud of, curling it round into Bowling's top right hand corner. The goal gave the visitors a life line, and after 28 minutes it was all square and Terry Fearns bagged his tenth of the campaign when he nodded home from close range after a Robbie Lawton free-kick picked him out perfectly. Andy Raplh made yet another impressive save to keep Steve Hawes' powerful low drive out. Amazingly Vauxhall scored a third before half time, a feat that was thought to be impossible after the first 15 minutes. Terry Fearns going back to the leagues top scorer after a brief stint in second, dribbling past Bowling to stroke home at the death of the first half. Cumiskey noticed the Worksop shot-stopper off his line, but his long range effort was just over and unable to give Vauxhall what would have been a vital 4-2 lead. Caudwell scored again after converting Bambrook's cross past Andy Raplh, 3-3. Caudwell thought he was taking home the match ball minutes later, only for Ralph once again making a reaction save. In the dying momrnts the game was won, by Worksop. Davies forward run caused problems before he let a 25 yard belter loose that Raplh couldn't stop. A thrilling game for any neutrals in the ground, heart-breaking for Motors, and the end of a terrible week. Man of the Match: It seems strange to hand it to someone who conceded four goals, but Andy Raplh had a good game, it took three good goals and a penalty to beat him, the score could have turned into a cricket score had the ex-Tranmere keeper not been playing so well.
