Cup Heriocs II

Vauxhall hosted one of the toughest teams at this stage as under-pressure Mike Walsh brought his Southport team across the Wirral. Vauxhall played away to Beddlington Terriors at the same stage last term, now it was probably the hardest tie of the round, Southport won their first four in the league, but only picked up one win in the last six attempts. On-loan Chester striker Mark Beesley pulled out of the cup squad after talks with his agent.

Vauxhall started the better, Cumiskey noticed the keeper off his line and tried his luck, but hit well over. It took a twice taken penalty to brake the deadlock, Fearns was upended inside the box, Cumiskey stepped up to calmly score, but was made to retake, only for the exact same outcome.

Vauxhall remained on top for the rest of the half, but couldn't turn their possession into goals. towards the end of the half Andy Whittaker seemingly kicked out at Andy Ralph in the Motors goal, and amazingly the ref decided not to take action against the ex-Lancaster striker.

The second half started quieter, and took until 69 minutes for the next goal when a Motors corner was headed in by Craig Robinson for his first goal of the season.

Southport seemingly gave themselves a lifeline when Lee Ashcroft scored a late penalty. Four minutes later Fearns won his second penalty of the match and Cumiskey converted his third!

Mike Walsh ran a gaunlet of angry fans at the end of the match as did the rest of the squad (with exception of Ashcroft who was clapped). Alvin McDonald, who was worried of lack of support, was clapped and cheered off with the team that revived memories of Moss Rose last December.

The Motormen are in the third round qualifiying of this competition for only the third time in their history.
