Motors Suffer First Defeat

The game at Rossett Park got of to quiet start until after 13 minutes the deadlock was broken when Marine star Steve Rimmer who was a lacking a little match practice despite lasting a full 90 minutes for a couple of reserve games prior to the clash, failed to make any contact with the ball that led to The Motormen gaining their first spot kick of the new campaign.

Peter Cumiskey, who has scored two out of three penalties in pre-season already stepped up and kept his nerve and gave Motors an early advantage over the hosts.

Vauxhall stepped up the gear a little and started to play well for the majority of the half. After 34 minutes The Mariners replied when a wonderful run from winger Eddie Hussin who then released the ball to Paul McNally who struck his shot straight passed Motors number 1 Andy Ralph.

An equaliser from The Mariners gave them huge confidence after their 4-1 crash to Harrogate Town last week as they built on their eqaliser to produce a 2-1 lead right on half time, when Gary Randles' perfect cross led to an unmarked Eddie Hussin who gave Marine manager Roger Patience an easier team talk as they went in with a 2-1 lead.

Half Time: Marine 2-1 Vauxhall Motors

In the second half after about twenty minutes played the home side were rewarded with a penalty when central defensive star Craig Robinson was accused of handballing inside the area. From the resulting spot kick the hosts found themselves further ahead when former Chester striker Steve Whitehall stepped up and beat Andy Ralph from 12 yards.

Three minutes later Motors' midfielder Carl Nesbitt pulled one back to make it 3-2 and suddenly The Motormen were back in with a shout with 23 minutes plus injury time still left on the clock.

Motors dominated right up untill the end and never gave up but unfortunatly they were unable to brake down a well organised Marine defence and went back to Rivacre Park with their first loss of the season.

Full Time: Marine 3-2 Vauxhall Motors

Man of the Match -
