Motors So Close To A Win
By Andrew Nixon
August 4 2003
Vauxhall Motors fans seen a much improved performance after last seasons defeat by Chester City. A late goal for Chester new boy Ian Foster denied Motors a win but a draw was a fair result.

The game started very slowly with not much action to report about. There was only one real chance in the first half that fell to Chester's Kevin Rapley who hit the post and the ball was then cleared.

Most of the set pieces in the first half came to nothing and neither Andy Ralph nor Wayne Brown had much to do.

Moments before half time there was a substition Kevin Lynch who looked to have been struggling from when he went down replaced Gareth Hooper and the captains armband went to striker Nicky Young.

Half Time: Vauxhall Motors 0-0 Chester City

Midway through the second half there was a couple of changes for the home side being shot-stopper Steve Hilton replacing Andy Ralph, Terry Fearns for Jamie Hughes, Neil Rigby replaced Robbie Lawton and Stuart Wright came on for Neil McCann.

After 77 minutes Chester's Ben Davies almost broke the deadlock with an excellent strike that hit the cross bar from about 25 yards out.

After that chance was missed Vauxhall hit City on the break and a lack of communication between former on-loan star Danny Collins had a mix-up with Chester City's shot-stopper Wayne Brown that led to a very simple goal for Jamie Hughes and The Motormen were ahead.

Vauxhall were unable to hold their lead and 5 minutes later Ian Foster spoilt what would have been a great win for the home side with a good shot that went over Steve Hilton as he came out to try and take the ball from the strikers feet.

Full Time: Vauxhall Motors 1-1 Chester City

Man Of Match - Craig Robinson for a good performance, good heading every time City tried the ball over the top.
