In the opening stages of the game Emley got off to the better start keeping possession well. Then came a free kick for foul on Fearns by Rob Tonks but it came to nothing and Wakefield retained possession. Kevin Lynch played a long ball through to Fearns but fortunately for the hosts he fouled Crossley and a free kick was rewarded. A couple of minutes later Young found himself free on the right hand side and crossed the ball into the box but over hit it and Fearns couldn’t meet it. Simeon Bambrook then ran towards goal before hitting a low shot only to be denied by Ralph. After that Andy McMullen fouled Bambrook about 20 yards from goal, from the resulting free kick Motormen’s Craig Robinson cleared the ball for a corner to Wakefield. Tonks took the corner and McMullen headed the ball away. After heading the ball away McMullen looked to be in pain and changed his boots and was able to carry on.
A poor goal kick by Paul Cuss fell into the path of Ward and he crossed into the box and Young almost broke the deadlock for the Motormen. Mike Reynolds then played a good ball into the area but Danny Day struck well over. Then Steve Aspinall played a high ball for Young to knock and was so close from playing Fearns on goal before Andy Wilson did well to intercept the pass. A couple of minutes later Ward had a cross half cleared by the Wakefield defence and the ball fell to Lynch who hit a shot only for Cuss to make a comfortable save. Lincoln Adams shown skill good skill on the right and earned himself a corner. Tonks took the resulting corner but was easily headed away be McMullen with ease. Then quick thinking by Aspinall of a free kick saw Fearns run to soon and was caught offside much to the disbelief of Manager Alvin McDonald and his Assistant Peter Carroll. Adams fouled Lynch. From the free kick Ward crossed the ball into the box and Young nearly found his striking partner Fearns but Cuss came out to claim the ball.
After 20 minutes into the game Carl Nesbit played agog through ball into the path of Fearns but he was offside. Good work down the left by Wayne McDermott then left Young with a crossing opportunity but it all came to nothing. Next in the game Reynolds ran down the wing only to be tackled by McDermott and corner was given. On about the half hour mark Andy Wilson played a good one two with Paul David and hit a good shot that was blocked by Motormen’s Andy McMullen.
Vauxhall made a good attempt to try and break the deadlock when Aspinall played the ball to Young and he made an excellent pass to Ward on the right but a poor cross was the end result. Then Kevin Lynch shown some good skill before crossing into the area but was to high for Young to get his head on it. After that Aspinall crossed into Young who made a good attempt at goal from a header and Paul Cuss watched it go just pass the post. As Vauxhall continued to dominate up to half time they were rewarded with a goal from Terry Fearns. He found himself free on the right hand side and cut in and struck the ball from all of 20 yards and it went beyond Cuss and in of the post (38 mins). This was ironic that Terry Fearns had scored if you read the interview with Alvin. Terry Fearns was almost in on goal again from a Lynch pass but Cuss came rushing out of his area and headed the ball away. Just before half time Lynch played a good flick towards Fearns but he failed to read the pass.
Half Time - Wakefield & Emley 0 - 1 Vauxhall Motors
Vauxhall came back out looking to kill the game off. Lynch couldn't pick a man out in the area apart from the head of Steve Nicholson. Tonks then pulled the ball back to Reynolds and he crossed the ball into the area and Craig Robinson headed the ball up in the air and Ralph did well to punch it away. Mike Reynolds found himself in some space after the Vauxhall defence backed off and hit a low shot into the hands of Ralph. Then moments later there was a lot of confusion in the Motors penalty area and saw Aspinall head clear of the line and captain Phil Brazier cleared just before the hour mark. McDermott did some more effective skill down the left before playing in Terry Fearns but he couldn't get into a shooting position. Then Wakefield tried to play a bit of football as Rob Tonks crossed into the area and Robinson headed clear.
Wakefield then had a corner on 60 mins Brazier misjudged his control on his chest and corner was to follow. Bambrook took the corner and Ralph dealt with it with ease. Wakefield equalised with an Adams header that just beat Ralph on 68 mins. Then Wakefield made the first sub of the game when goalscorer Lincoln Adams came off for Miles Thorpe. Vauxhall was in desperation of another goal to seal all 3 points. Shots then flew in from everywhere when McDermott played into the six yard box and some how it just rolled passed Fearns out stretched right foot and Lynch hit the post from two yards out. Aspinall struck the ball towards goal and only to be denied buy an Emley defender. Carl Nesbitt finished the move but not in the way we expected, he struck well over the bar. Vauxhall made a sub: Kevin Lynch came off for Peter Cumiskey. Bambrook was then caught offside and shown his anger by hurling foul and abusive language at an unexpected linesman G. Wilson.
With 10 minutes to go Bambrook continued his tirade at Mr Wilson and was sent off immediately only to square up to the same linesman again and continued to dish out personal insults. There were two more subs thrown on for Vauxhall at a last attempt to take all 3 points. Steve Morgan for Terry Fearns and Derek Ward for Robbie Lawton. Lawton made an immediate impact with a good run down the right. Wakefield made another sub: Phil Taylor for Danny Day. Lawton won an injury time corner but Vauxhall failed to take advantage and the full time whistle soon followed.
Man of Match - Terry Fearns: for an inspired performance and a great goal. He has finally remembered how to find the net.
