Vauxhall's Crash to Accy

Fantastic
By Craig Haddock April 16 2003
Vauxhall Motors Played hosts to League Champions Accrington Stanley, it turned out to be a fairly even game that could of gone either way, but for a Rory Prendergast goal.

Vauxhalls Started brightly from kick off, Peter Cumiskey with a cross straight to accy keeper Jamie Speare’s arms. Lutel James sprinted into Motors’ penalty area past Craig Robinson only for Kevin Lynch to clear for a corner, which was dealt with sufficiently by the home side. Vauxhall’s were again on the attack with Young playing in Lynch who couldn’t get around the ball and scuffed the shot. Robbie Lawton showed a touch off class with his turn on ex-Chester player Steven Halford.

A poor back pass by accy, that wasn’t controlled by Jamie Speare almost, let in Fearns but the ball ran wide. Just minutes later a similar situation, again Terry Fearns chased, but Speare headed out for a throw. Lutel James ran towards goal and threw a couple of dummies in for good measure, and won a corner. Steven Halford clipped Young from behind gave a away a free kick, McMullen’s free kick went straight to the arms of the accy keeper. From that a long ball bounced through the Motors defence, James again got onto it with a great control, but his shot was scrambled clear by Any Ralph, Lutel James ran into the back of McMullen and won a free-kick, just 16 minutes into the game, a Prendergast free kick of the head of James agonisingly over.

Carl Nesbitt set off Fearns who paced away from Halford and forced a save from Speare. Motors “new boy” Mike Tomlinson crossed the ball in and accy skipper Peter Cavanagh cleared. Cumiskey played a ball down the line to Nicky Young, who played a good pass just to far ahead of Carl Nesbitt who slid to try to keep possession and conceded a fouled on Robbie Williams. Lutel James gave Andy McMullen problems all night and on 25 minutes a nice run and shot, which from our view in the Rivacre Park press box looked in all the way, but was just wide. Mike Tomlinson had a clash of heads with Andy Proctor, the resulting Andy McMullen free kick came to nothing.

Cumiskey had a good run down the left taking on Prendergast and Russell Payne, only for the two Accy players to keep at Peter and end up putting it out for a corner. Cumiskey took the corner, and Craig Robinson headed over. On the half hour mark a good turn by Fearns, played in to Young who was caught offside. Paul Mullin, who had a good game, crossed the ball in on the 34th minute to Rory Prendergast to strike home from 6 yards. Rory Prendergast ran into The Motormen’s penalty area, only to be stopped by Craig Robinson, to the disbelief of the Accy manager John Coleman referee Mr. Simms didn’t give a penalty. John Coleman let his feelings known with his four-lettered tirade at the referee, and insisted they might as well go home (but still in four lettered words).

Lutel James again catching Vauxhalls on the back foot, only for Wayne McDermott to get rid of the danger. Prendergast knocked the ball onto Mullin who forced a save and a corner from Ralph. Ralph was again called into action not long later when a Prendergast header from a Cavanagh cross forced a save form the ex-Tranmere shot stopper. A Steve Hollis cross to Paul Mullin who headed over. James again shot just wide of Ralph’s goal. Nicky Young set up Terry Fearns who struck just the wrong side of Speare’s right hand post. Prendergast tried one last time to make something, but for a good piece of defending by Tomlinson. HT

Mike Marsh with a cross early in the second half, spilled by Ralph and Robinson had to clear. Peter Cumiskey took it down the other end and a cross blocked and Speare picked up the loose ball. Ralph made a great save to keep Hollis’ low shot at bay. James made a good, skilful run down the right, but couldn’t pick out a pass with his cross.

10 minutes into the second half Mike Tomlinson went off after a lengthy treatment on the pitch. When play resumed Young couldn’t keep his sot down. The Accy fans were in high spirits and rightly so, Accy were playing some good football, good passing, movement and kept Vauxhall’s on their toes. Another lengthy treatment session on the pitch this time it was goal scorer Rory Prendergast. Motors captain Lynch played a good through ball to Fearns, who just shot wide. Fearns looked sharp all night, but just couldn’t find the back of the net. Accy fans cheered every successful pass by a red shirt. McMullen fouled Mullin just outside the box, the free kick fell to James, who forced a save from Ralph.

Robbie Lawton was replaced by Derek Ward.

James crossed from the left, just to far for reds vice captain Paul Mullin. Aspinall replaced Robinson Speare dropped a Cumiskey corner, Carl Nesbitt pounced, but Accy got the ball away. With 13 minutes left Accy made their first sub Michael Knowles replaced Mike Marsh, Lynch tried his luck, but for a good stop by Speare. With 5 minutes remaining Motors made their last sub, while Accy used their last 2 James won a corner, after combining with Paul Mullin down the right. In stoppage time Ralph easily caught a Cavanagh free kick. Fearns could have clinched a point for the home side, but he shot when really he had the time a space to take it nearer. Wayne McDermott was the next player to have treatment on the pitch in the closing stages. Knowles hit a good shot in the dying seconds, but Ralph saved. The whistle closely followed Knowles’ effort.

Man of the Match

Lutel James: A fantastic performance, full of turns and dummies a joy to watch, a terror to play against. Watch out Conference defence. I would be surprised if he is not snapped up by a bigger team this Summer.
