Motors Leave it Late

Terry Fearns
By Craig Haddock
April 7 2003
1/4/03-Vauxhalls left it until the last six minutes to come from 1-0 behind, to take a deserved 2-1 victory.
Terrible conditions at Rivacre Park resricted the players to a poor first half performance. Vauxhalls gave David Miller's Celtic side some early scares, with Young racing past Darren Bowman, he crossed it to Fearns, but Fearns' header was cleared. A poor Back pass from Colin Potts gave Cumiskey a run on goal, but for a well timed sliding tackle by Terry Bowker.

Celtic fought back, but without affect, the wind got behind a corner, and Kevin Parr managed to keep it in with his header back to Bowker, but McDermott cleared his shot of the line.

Fearns showed his speed and skill by skipping past 3 Celtic defenders, then he was through on goal, with over 30 goals to his name this season you would expect him to score, to to the relief of Celtic keeper Craig Dootson he made a poor shot.

Celtic player Jerome Fitzgerald twisted his ankle mid-way through the first half, after a long treament session on the field, he was crried of by a strecher and taken of in a ambulance, he was replaced by Dan Caldicott.

Just when it looked like nothing was going to come Potts laid off Nathan Wharton 35 yards out, he stuck it giving Ralph no chance. 1-0.

Vauxhalls looked to have more purpose to them in the second half, a host of chances went begging, off a quickly taken free-kick Fearns was again through, but his shot came back of the bar. Lynch was then booked for taking down sub Caldicott.

Cumiskey had a free-kick that curled around the wall and the post. A Cumiskey cross to Young, who turned to shot, pulling out a good save from Dootson. Lynch also missed a chance he should of scored, put it over from 3 yards out after a pss from Fearns. Lawton saw his shot messed up after running up half the length of the field, before a poor finish.

A Cumiskey corner found Lynch at the back post, who headed in, and gave The Motormen something to fight for. Cumiskey (who set up the last 2 Motors goals of corners) wanted to get on the score sheet only for a great save by Dootson, but the rebound fell kindly to Fearns who skipped pst German and curled into the top corner past Dootson to the delight of the crowd in side Rivacre Park. 2-1.
