DD went out with Roger the Clifton captain and tossed the gerbils lucky 10p up in the air - afterwards he told me he'd won once with it against Old Derbeians - this counts as lucky for Dave as he doesn't win very often considering the number of times he tosses!! Up it went - tails was called - down it came - rolled along the edge, wobbled and then.........tails it was. The Scoobs were put into bat and frankly the game was won and lost in that moment - it just took a long time to complete.
Out went the cheeky duo Ant and Dick to open the innings facing 'Hoppy' Hopewell in their helmets. First ball was pitched halfway down and bounced before reaching the keeper. Ant took off his tin lid and threw it to Stevo umpiring at Square Leg. Second ball, in the air over point by about 15 yards 2 runs. Third ball straight down points throat! Ant out trying to dominate 3rd ball on a difficult 150 ish Duffield wicket - Clifton visibly grew and Duffield visibly sagged at this - bad cricket.
There was then attritional cricket between Dickie, Pete Turner, Scat and the opening bowlers for a good old while before at 40-3 DD came in. Now DD is known for being a boring batsman, but boy is he in form. His last five innings have been 75*, 37*, 66, 47 and 51* (last Sunday), and he is hoping the season never ends! In this one he hit (not snicked) his first ball from Hopewell deliberately through the vacant 2nd slip area for four - the bowler doubled up as if suffering from acute appendicitis and groaned in a pitiful sort of way - 40-3 and no second slip for a new bat to the fastest bowler in 5S - DD had no sympathy. Anyway supported first by Olsen(14) and then Max(17) the score ground on to about 100 whereupon DD was clapped for his 50!!! There was later a recount - Poyner had been putting a line at the end of each over on the batsmans score which GC had interpreted as a single!! So DD was actually out for 47 and the innings folded after 43 overs for 127. Another 20 runs - using all the overs - it could have been so different as we shall see. Clifton bowled well with veteran Smith taking 4-30 and Hopewell 5-23.
Nice tea, footy results, Glos beating Worcs, back to the game.
Clifton set of at quite a pace against Duffields average topping duo of the Ant and Elmo. Elmo made a breakthrough having the opener caught by Scat at slip - good catch.
Then the funniest moment of the game. Two pieces of voluptuous young tottie walked passed the sight screen, all the Duffield fielders gazed longingly murmuring approval and waited 'til they went past. The batsman (who often plays in the prem) was confused as to the wait as the tottie was at the non-strikers end! It was enough - in came Elmo -bowled - backward defensive, ball spins back takes off the bail - out bowled. All the Duffield fielders a whoopin and a hollerin and a wavin as the two totties stuck out their chests and waved back. As for the bat - well later he did manage to see the funny side. He was followed to the wicket by one D. Flower - very appropriate name.
Elmo got another wicket and then at 84-4 disaster. At point Mikey dropped a regulation catch off Flower - this would have made it 85-5 and we know they do not have that strong a tail - but from there it went from bad to worse, White had a good spell and one wicket. Scat came on and Whitey dropped a tough one at slip and Clifton were home and dry although it took 40 odd overs. Flower finished with 63*. They are now promoted - and deservedly so - good luck to them next year. As for the scoobs, we need to play well and with discipline to finish third and end the season well - bring on Rosehill.
P.S. The tottiemeter reading for this game was intense - one single moment put 52 year old Peter Ellis on a 'hat-trick' and I'm assured that hasn't happened for quite a long time.
