For various reasons we lost the likes of Mr Adam Short, Mr Philip Jones, and Mr Archie Fry for this weeks battle against Spondon. Along with one Chris Mills still missing in action none other than the big man Rob Scattergood, the in form Dickie "JT" Stevenson, the boxom chap Mr Antill and one of our up and comers Mike Poyner joined the first team to take on the challenge ahead.
As our skip doesn't like to share with his team who actually won the toss, I am not sure whether we chose to field or not but our whites went on and the bowlers loosened up. However with about 10 minutes remaining we were an opening bowler short. Mr Nicholls was still at home and obviously unaware when we were due to start. The fact we had started at 1:00pm the week before and he arrived on time bemused us all but this still did not solve the problem of who was going to open the bowling with our rabbit hunter Dong. So Mr Elliot was given the honours.
It wasn't long before Dong's bait started to work and in his second over the rabbit poked his head out only to be blasted away by Dong with his shotgun. The batsmen trying to hit the ball just a little too hard and an easy catch resulted for Elliot at mid-on. A good start for the toffs. Elliot was struggling to find consistent line and length in his overs and conceded around 5 to 6 runs an over, however this seemed to keep the batsmen satisfied as they continued to pat back the turning, bouncing deliveries Dong sent down over after over. After a little more teasing Dong continued to lure the bunnies out of their burrows only to be shot at point blank range. At one point his figures were 3 wickets for 2 runs. This magnificent spell of bowling continued for all of Dong's 15 overs and he ended with 4 wickets for 12 runs. Not a bad effort and he actually knew his season average afterwards which is a little scary. Elliot however ended wicket less for 59 runs after only 10 overs.
In the meantime our late boy Mr Nicholls had arrived however a very disgruntled skipper was determined not to bowl him. Let me tell you there was some dummy spitting and words had both during and after the game. Simms replaced Elliot and managed varying spin and bounce which seemed to trouble both batsmen and keeper. Antill took over from Dong to complete the last 10 from the other end and bowled reasonably full and straight. With the run rate at about 3 an over and a few wickets down we were looking good, however some good batting later on lifted the run rate and Spondon ended with 195 for 9. A modest total on a very small ground with a super fast outfield. Simms bowled well and ended with 3 wickets and Antill cleaned up the tail and finished with 2 wickets.
Tea was taken and very much enjoyed by all with a very nice spread being put on. Then on went the batting attire as The Landlord and Sparky opened up. A good start was required but the Landlord was soon back in the shed after his poles were down once again. This led the way for Mr Elliot to join Sparky and try to set Duffield on there way. Sparky was struggling a bit and the Spondon lads were letting him know about it. He soon succumbed to the pressure and was bowled playing a false shot. The in form JT came to the crease hoping to continue his good form in the scoobs however after a couple of positive shots his poles were down aswell after missing a juicy full toss from the spinner. And it wouldn't be an adequate dismissal without JT giving his little mouthful before trudging off. I believe the lad concerned was "lucky I didn't wrap this bat around his head" - some big words from the pavilion. Simms came in at five, however once again poles down and skip was on his way. At the other end Mr Elliot was quietly keeping up with the run rate, hitting a majority of fours on the small ground. The buxom warrior was in at six. He batted well and played a belting cover drive, however with a young yoooooff proving slightly to quick he called for the tin hat. This didn't matter much as he snicked one whilst standing on the square legs toes. Robin came and went for not many once more being adjudged LBW. Then in came the late boy with something to prove. Mr Nicholls (I must point out that he was not batting behind all of the ******* scoobs) batted well and continued to use a broken bat for the whole of his innings. Elliot soon departed for 61 being caught off the glove. The big man Scat came and went very quickly which put a lot of pressure on Dong and hughy to try and save the game. This was not an impossible task as Dong has only been dismissed once this year and averages 57. However he preferred to use his pad rather bat once too often and was on his way. With about ten overs to go Poyner joined Nicholls at the crease. They managed to get down to about the fifth last over but it wasn't enough as Duffield were bowled out for 155. Poyner batted well and finished not out and Hugo also batted well when he was at the crease.
In the end Duffield bowled and fielded well on a small fast ground and 195 was very gettable if we batted well, however this wasn't the case. It was very good of Mr Short to actually call from his five in a tent romp with four girls. Although not much was heard from our end as the music was far too loud. However we failed to hear from Jones and Fry who were obviously having a really great time at the test match. Thanks boys for your concern. On the totty front, the meter registered well with Spondon’s Aussies displaying his girlfriend once again and a couple of other pieces floated around adding to the scenery. Mr Nicholls would certainly have snaffled the dummy for this week but the skip wouldn't have been too far behind let me tell you. Until next week CYA.
