Mark Gower
Having ended the League One season with the title it completed a fantastic story for the player who moved from plying his trade in the Conference with Barnet to the Blues in 2003.
In the space of just three seasons at the club Gower will now be showcasing his talents in the Championship.
Gower told the official website today after putting the ink on his new deal: "I'm delighted to have signed a new contract.
"When I first joined Southend it was a good move for me to get back into the league from Barnet.
"The club is moving in the right direction; we've got a new league to play in and obviously this season the teams we're going to be playing against is a joy.
"Last season was lovely and still reflecting on it now what we have achieved in the last couple of years is amazing.
"It's great that the manager wanted me to stay and hopefully we can achieve good things next season."
Gower insists Southend will not be going simply to make up the numbers and hopes the team can find their feet early to make an impact at the start of the campaign.
"You watch a lot of Championship football on the TV more than League One and Two and the players are stronger and better," he said.
"It's just a matter of getting into it and once we've played five or six games we'll know what we are up against.
"Hopefully the players that we've got here can adapt to it, find their feet early and get some good results.
"Some weeks we will be pinching ourselves at the stadiums we will be playing at and it will be a great experience, but at the same time we're here to do a job."
