Porthcawl Town 0
Garden Village 3 Ashley Richards (20' & 39') & Paul Dickie (33')
Welsh League Division 2 Saturday January 14th, 2006
Garden Village returned to winning ways on Saturday with a convincing win over struggling Porthcawl at a sun-soaked Lock's Lane. Ashley Richards struck his ninth and tenth goals of the season either side of a penalty miss, but Paul Dickie was at hand to score from the rebound for his third strike is as many games since joining from Ynystawe.
Bob Lloyd's side welcomed back Derrick Jenkins from a one-game suspension and the former Briton Ferry forward replaced Carl Alfei on the bench.
The boys in blue - Village's away colours used for the first time - had to wait until the 15th minute for their first chance, it fell to Jamie Mansell but he could only blaze over the top. The visitors did, though, have better luck 5 minutes later when Ashley Richards broke the deadlock. Strike partner Paul Dickie put him through and, after beating one defender, rounded former Wrexham and Newport goalkeeper Will Alston and slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
Richards should have scored his second just over 10 minutes later from the penalty spot after a Porthcawl defender handled his flick into the box. The tall front-man took responsibility instead of regular penalty taker David Rimmer and saw his spot-kick saved by Alston, but fortunately Paul Dickie was quickest to the loose ball to tap in his third goal for the club.
The game looked to be made safe shortly afterwards when Village grabbed a third through Ashley Richards, who struck the ball over the top of the oncoming Will Alston for his second of the match.
: HALF TIME : Porthcawl Town 0 - 3 Garden Village
Village continued to create chances during a chilly second-half but were not rewarded with any goals to go along with the three scored in the opening 45 minutes.
Young Dayle Selvage, who had been causing the Porthcawl defence all sorts of problems down the right-hand side, came close to scoring himself on 56 minutes. After skipping past two defenders the 17-year-old sent a deep cross into the Porthcawl area which looked to be dipping towards goal, but goalkeeper Alston was at hand to palm the ball over the top for a corner.
The youngster turned provider for Ashley Richards 10 minutes before the end of a quiet second period from a free-kick, two-goal Richards ran in front of the 'keeper to meet the ball with his head but he could only direct over the bar. Substitute Lee Waite, who had been on the pitch for less than a minute, also sent his header off target after getting on the end of a long Jamie Mansell free-kick; a few minutes later he was also put through on goal by Dayle Selvage but chose to roll the ball across the area to Derrick Jenkins, but the substitute couldn't connect with the ball properly and sent his shot wide.
Chris Thomas struck a shot just wide in the last minute and when the final whistle blew Village must have felt that they should have converted those chances in the second-half, but the three points gained were enough to see the visitors move up two places to fifth in the table.
Village: Mark Snell; Jamie Mansell, Steve Bater, David Rimmer; Dayle Selvage, Paul Bromage, Chris Thomas, Steven Evans, Marc Lloyd (Jack Jenkins 80'); Ashley Richards (Lee Waite 84'), Paul Dickie (Derrick Jenkins 61').
