Welsh League Cup Round 1
Saturday September 24th, 2005

Garden Village bounced back from last Saturday's disappointing result against ENTO Aberaman to produce a fine performance to see off Barry Town in the Shamrock League Cup at Treforest, one of many upsets to be registered at the first round stage.

The visitors lead 2-0 at the break thanks to an own-goal and a Steven Evans strike, 16-year-old midfielder Dayle Selvage wrapped up the win with his second goal in as many games.

Village boss Bob Lloyd made a few changes to the side that lost against ENTO Aberaman the week before; Neil Lloyd came in to replace Carl Alfei at wing-back, recent acquisition from Neath Athletic, Steve Bater, replaced Nicky Romanello in midfield while Steven Evans was pushed forward to partner Ashley Richards up-front instead of Craig Blake.

Lloyd was left extremely happy with the result in Treforest.

"I was very pleased," said Lloyd, "It was a big improvement on the week before. The boys played really well and we looked a lot stronger."

He does, though, acknowledge that we weren't up against the Barry Town of a few years ago.

"They were nowhere near like the Barry Town of the past, but it's just like the Swansea-Nottingham Forest match, you're still playing against the name."

He added: "Barry Town is still a big name in Welsh football."

Garden Village must now put their cup heroics behind them and concentrate on winning a league game for the first time since the end of August when we travel to Gwynfi United at the weekend.

"Gwynfi has never been an easy place to go," said Lloyd, "And the following week we play Troedyrhiw at home. They will both be tough games."

Village: Mark Snell; David Evans, David Rimmer, Jamie Mansell; Neil Lloyd, Dayle Selvage, Steve Bater, Chris Thomas, Paul Bromage; Steven Evans, Ashley Richards.

Used Subs: Michael Hughes, Carl Alfei, Craig Blake.
