Goytre United 6 - 0 Garden Village
Shamrock Travel Welsh League Cup, Round 1 Saturday September 9th, 2006
Welsh League champions Goytre United progressed into round 2 of the League Cup with this thumping win over Garden Village, but in no way does the scoreline reflect the visitiors' performance at Glenhafod Park.
Village were looking comfortable and more than matched their hosts, that was until Village goalkeeper was harshly red carded by the referee for his challenge on United's Richard Ryan. With no goalkeeper on the bench defender David Rimmer doned the gloves and took his position between the sticks - a role he held in a league game at Newport YMCA in May last year.
The home side benefited from their one-man advantage and by the break were two goals to the good courtesy of strikes from Richard Ryan and Luke Bowen.
Former Aberystwyth, Afan Lido and Port Talbot front-man Ryan then went on to complete his hat-trick with Darren Lyons completing the scoring with two strikes late on for the champions.
Despite this heavy defeat, Village's biggest since the 7-1 drubbing by Pontypridd Town in March 2005, manager Bob Lloyd still felt his side had the better chances.
He said: "Yes it was very diappointing considering we played really well up until the sending off.
"Having said that we had some really good chances before that incident to take the lead and had the better chances. But in all credit to them they showed us how to finish."
